Incredible History Of India's Geography

Historical context to our present India
A perspective to our today's India. I would recommend this book for most of us who have seen countless debates on news channels and are still trying to understand rational/ context for many events. History often teaches us - greatly so from success and failures of our ancestors.

Fulfills the promise of the title
A really good book providing some general background on the history of India tied to the geography. I enjoyed it as one element of my background for return travel to India. Probably assumes a bit of prior knowledge about India to be useful to a reader.

A must read for history enthusiasts
A must read book for anyone who wishes to know about the history of Indian civilization. This is well narrated and put in proper context, which is missing in most of our discourse today. The book is clearly not meant to be a detailed history of Indian civilization but is supposed to be just enough to whet one's appetite.Indian school textbooks describe ancient Indian history in the most boring possible way, and some enthusiasm is displayed only for describing histories of the Mughals, Britishers, and then Hitler. Also, nothing about India's maritime history, it's ship building, trading before the 8th century is generally thought in schools. If you are coming from such a background this book will open your mind to things you probably didn't know about Indian civilization before. The only reason I am giving four stars and not five is because the Maratha history is almost entirely skipped. Even though the author argues how map making improved seriously under the Marathas, how the prime focus/enemy of the British in Bengal were the Marathas, only cursory mention is given to the Maratha history in the book. It is after all very evident that the Maratha's played a significant role in shaping today's India's geography.

All history, no geography
I picked up this book because I thought it was going to be more geography-centric, describing how the geography of the nation has changed through the ages. The book begins extremely well, with the description of the Harappan civilization and firmly establishing our roots as a seeder (?) nation. It's with the introduction of the Maurya Empire that I begin to notice the narrative getting out of hand. Some places the history is plain confusing, and in others it's skimmed over in a sentence. I do understand that it's not the purview of the book to give detailed insights into every important event, but the narrative skips many chapters in India's history.Except for in the first chapter, there is no mention of geography, and that's why I feel this book should have been given a different title.
