Fun fantasy movie
"Willow" is a fantasy movie I had heard about and knew I had seen at some point, but I didn't remember much of it. I bought this movie because I'm a huge George Lucas fan and I knew he had a hand in this movie as producer, but what I didn't know, upon further investigation, was that he also came up with the story and characters. The movie is directed by Lucas' longtime friend, Ron Howard. I really enjoyed this movie and had fun following the character of Willow, played by Warwick Davis, on his quest in this movie. There are other reviews on here that go deeper into the story, so I won't go into it, but it's a fun movie that is very '80s in its presentation, but that's something I like about it as I'm a big '80s movie fan. It's incredible the amount of little people Lucas and director Ron Howard were able to get for this movie. Also, the real-world locations and sets used for "Willow" are well crafted and really make the world- building believable. I very much enjoyed the swordplay and fight sequences as well as the special effects, such as the morphing sequence, which was a technical breakthrough at the time. The Blu-ray includes a special feature covering this process amongst other documentaries covering the making of the movie. The recent death of actor Val Kilmer (RIP) prompted me to write this review. Kilmer brings courage, humor, and heroism to the role of Madmartigan. It's funny when he dresses up as a woman to try to hide from the men in search of the baby. I hope that new generations will discover "Willow" and be entertained by his performance as Madmartigan. Also, Joanne Whalley is great in her portrayal of Sorsha. She and Kilmer would marry after having met on this movie. Pat Roach, who previously played a Nazi mechanic and a Thugee in the "Indiana Jones" movies 'Raiders of the Lost Ark" and "Temple of Doom," has a role as the evil skull faced General Kael. He is definitely terrifying. The picture presentation is great. Yes, it still looks very much '80s, but it looks the best it can be in high - definition. The sound is great too. Then again, this is a Lucasfilm Ltd. production, so expect nothing less than the best in picture and sound. I highly recommend "Willow" to people who are looking for a new movie, fantasy or not, to enjoy.

BLU-RAY version review
I've seen some pretty poorly done transfers of older movies to Blu-Ray format, ones that look little better than the standard definition DVD version. This one looks very good. Very good indeed.I watched this movie in Germany when it was first released, and loved it. Had it on DVD and loved it, now on blu ray and I love it even more. Very crisp and clear picture. The menu is quick, no frustrating animation that takes forever to do what you want it to do. Play kicked off right away. Even the time menu for skipping chapters is well done and very very visible - brown blocks that look like the top of a flute and a nice thumbnail of the chapter that you're jumping to.The Extras on the DVD (deleted scenes) is nice - Ron Howard talking about the movie and things they did gives some nice insight. The only downside is the 4:3 format for some of the extras, but the deleted scenes themselves are in the widescreen format and look good, although some of them you can tell they didn't get the audio processing finished. But they give some nice insight to the story since some of them are deleted story arcs and backstory bits that they cut for time. But the sad thing is that there's only a few of them, a total of like 12 and a half minutes total, half of that is Ron Howard talking about things. I had expected a movie like this to have had more deleted scenes, but there's the other extras such as the Making Of (a little under 24 minutes long), a part about the morphing (not quite 17 and a half minutes long), the video journal of Warwick Davis (just under 11 minutes long and has some slick footage from when he was just starting acting in Return of the Jedi as a 13 year old in an Ewok outfit), and the matte paintings. The story's been reviewed often enough so I'll just suffice it to say that it's still a joy to watch, even all these years later. The action scenes are crisp, and the special effects actually look a little less obvious than they did on the DVD. I remember the brownies and the hydra-like creature looking painfully done on the DVD, and while it's still obvious in some scenes how things were superimposed, it's far less glaring and in some scenes is not even noticeable. If you were a fan of the movie, and have a Blu-ray player, this is a MUST have for any collection. Worth every penny, very well done.

AWESOME GIFT
Willow is a childhood favorite of mine from the 1980's and it was directed by Ron Hoard. As well as being produced by George Lucas. It has that original Star Wars charm to it. Lots of fantasy action in it, and a great journey for Willow himself. Just like Luke Skywalker he starts as a simple character, but grows until he eventually becomes a hero in the end. Val Kilmer is great as Madmartigan he starts out as a jerk, but eventually redeems himself and becomes an excellent warrior by the end. He has lots of funny dialogue that will make you laugh. Interesting love story between him and Sorsha who also has a redemption moment in the end. Lots of really good creature effects, especially the two headed dragon scene. And the story in general is great. Thank you Amazon.

Peck... Peck... PECK PECK PECK PECK!
Willow is one of my favorite childhood films. I absolutely love Warwick Davis as Willow and Val Kilmer as Mad Mardigan. If you love fantasy adventure movies and a little cheese with the multilayer filming and puppetry, this is a great movie to satisfy that. Its an adventure that is like a Lord of the Rings before we get Peter Jackson's LotR; just done by George Lucas in the 80's. Its not LotR though, it is its own adventure with a great cast of a lot of famous people youd recognize today. For those who already familiar with Willow, this version is an Excellent copy to own, as its extended, amazing quality and zero audio issues.
