A great book for intermediate to advanced folders. Will be pretty intimidating for beginners.
As usual I received this book free of charge in exchange for a review. This time it was from Netgalley. Despite that generosity my scrupulously honest opinions follow below. In a nutshell, this book describes in great detail the art of Kusudama Origami, all those intricate spheres you see on the cover. The first few pages take you through the various types of folds and by page 15 we're starting right in on the first design. On the positive side, the photographs are brilliant and inspiring and the instructions are at the right level of detail for a moderately advanced artist to follow along with. If you've been through a bit of folding before this book will not bore you with a lot of introduction and preface. The only negative I would assign is that it says it's also for beginners and I cannot imagine a neophyte picking up this book and having great success. The first design involves joining together 12 different sheets of paper using over 80 folds. If you've been at this a while this is nothing but I imagine giving this to a teenager and having them come back to me after 5 minutes and say, "uhhh... dad?"In summary, this looks like a brilliant introduction to an ancient and complex art form. I recommend it highly if you've been at this a while but if this is the first Origami book you've ever looked at then you might want to try somewhere else first. This one is deep and complex and only really skims over the basics.
