Finnish Tutor: Grammar and Vocabulary Workbook (Learn Finnish with Teach Yourself): Advanced beginner to upper intermediate course (Language Tutors)

Great book!

I haven't really been able to do anything in the book because I don't know the 15 cases. Or much of any other rules for that matter because it doesn't explain the grammar rules. I've learned more from google than anything so far. It says beginner to intermediate but for me it is not a book beginners want to use.

It is a little too much in one book.

My husband and I are advanced Finnish speakers/readers, and this book is basically unusable. It dove straight into exercises without explanation or context. There was no clear connection from one page to the next. The organization is scattered and mysterious, though there's clearly high production value. Maybe this would work if you were with a Finnish tutor, but it is useless for self-study and improvement.

My parents are Finnish, and because I've lived outside of Finland my whole life I thought it would be good to improve my Finnish. But not so with this book. Even though I've already got a basic understanding of the language, this book has been almost useless to me, because it does not give much detailed grammatical info, but expects you to just figure it out on your own using your own intuition. The result? Mistakes after mistakes.

I am not native Finnish and even with conversational phrases, this book was too difficult and I failed most exercises 90% of the time. Even other natives had hard time explaining some of the conjugations which were written too brief or assume you will know a lot of context for a word.

I'm still working on it and it is a great addition to add. I am Finn issh. The "advanced beginner" level required for most exercises in this book probably equates to at least two years of serious and formal study. I trudged through it with much less prior study than that and still found it helpful, but I'm not sure I would advise other beginners to do the same.
