Q: Can this be used in a car?

There is one that has a clip for car use. Search it as such and you will find it.

Q: What can I clean this with? Mine came with a horrible smell, like fish!

Sorry to hear it had a bad smell! That's definitely not normal. It's possible that it was packaged too soon after production which didn't give the rubber backing a chance to fully air out. You can clean with a mild detergent and a damp cloth.

Q: If i have an on/off button at the socket, do i have to turn it on when using the earthing mat?

You should not have to turn it on, provided the on/off switch has 3 prongs that plug in. Usually the one at the bottom is round/cylindrical and is the ground prong. As long as it is plugged in the mat is grounded.
