It works - 10 days in total. Impressed.
Our son had sucked his thumb from day dot. At first we didn't really think much of it especially as seemed to calm him so well.As he got older though, he seemed to be sucking his thumb more and more, and it was beginning to effect his personality. He appeared less confident, more reserved, content in just sitting sucking his thumb rather than playing with his friends. After he turned 2, he was clearly far behind other children his age with his speech and it was obvious why.We initially tried positive encouragement and reward charts to try and dissuade him and then rather reluctantly tried the foul tasting nail varnish. Both had little success. After `googling' for other ideas we came across Dr Thumb. It was very much a hesitant purchase given the price and lack of reviews/information online, but we decided to take a punt.He wasn't overly keen on wearing it at first as this certainly wasn't a habit he wanted to give up. There were tears the first night and we had our doubts this would work. We eventually explained to him that by sucking his thumb he had stopped it from growing and that by wearing the `special' guard it would help it grow again and catch up with the other thumb! The next morning he was completely fine with it. In total it took 10 days of wearing 24/7 to completely break a habit he had for years. We used to take it off at meal and bath times and he never complained about putting it back on. No tears (apart from day 1!) and no dramas - just 10 days in total and he'd cracked it.Considering how he was, it seems almost a miracle to see him watch TV or read him a story without his thumb in his mouth. Simple concept that worked very well. If you can persevere through just 1 day/night of tears then I am sure this will work for you too. Recommended.

My son literally ate his way out of this!
My son literally ate his way out of this within 5 days. This was my last report! Instead of stopping him the guard just encrouged him to chew it. This is a perfect product for a child who loves to chew, nibble, suck on things!!!!! I'm at a loss on where to go from here. Even his dentist is shocked. A complete waste of money. The thumb is way to easy to splip out as well. It's easy for a child to continue to have sneaky thumb sucking sessions when not looking. If your child is a serious thumb sucker I'd give a wide berth.

It really works
I was sceptical about this working however my 6 yr old was desperate to stop sucking her thumb so we tried it. She had it on for 2 weeks day & night even when she was at school. It didn't hinder her writing & the teachers were very supportive. On the third week she stopped wearing it for school & now just wears it on a night and it has worked, I have not seen her suck her thumb once. I noticed that she was chewing the side of the guard a lot while she was wearing it so was concerned that as soon as the guard was removed she would start sucking her thumb again but she hasn't. I would highly recommend this but do think that your child needs to want to stop as my daughter could slip her thumb out without removing the guard. I could have put it on tighter but it left marks on her wrist & was uncomfortable for her to wear & I didn't want this. All in all very pleased & would recommend.

It 90% worked for us. I recommend it.
The last thumb guard we brought a year a go and it certainly broke the habit. My son who was 6 at the time nearly constantly sucked his thumb (due to anxiety) and within 2 weeks the thumb sucking had stopped. He wore the guard to school and it didn't stop him doing anything. Luckily school were supportive. I thought the first night would be hard but it wasn't nearly as bad as I thought it would be and the second night was only a bit of a struggle for him to fall asleep. We have just brought another thumb guard as our son has started to suck his thumb in the middle of the night. He's unaware he's doing it. Funny enough with the thumb guard on he doesn't even try to suck his thumb. This nightly thumb sucking is proving harder to break. He goes to sleep happily without sucking his thumb and sleeps for a good few hours before that thumb creeps in. So he now wears the thumb guard at night. He finds it comfortable to sleep wearing but the new one isn't as comfortable as the old one as they loosen up a bit with wear and get super comfortable.

Three Stars
It's nice and practical although my son managed to get his thumb out all the time.

Not very practical
I think technically the product should work but it failed to work for my son. I bought this for my 4 years old who sucks round the clock, because I thought the science behind it was ingenious. The problem is that I couldn't get the thumb guard to stay on his thumb. He always managed to wriggle it off his thumb and then continue sucking. I think the fitting is poor as it took him a few hours to figure out how to wriggle out of it and when I tired to make it tighter, he'd complain its hurting him (I could see the red markings it left on his skin). He even managed to bite a bit of it off. He sucks now more than ever! As far as am concerned its a wasted £25. I won't give up though, so I'm going to seek out other practical options, as this product is good in theory, but worthless in practise!.
