Q: Would this work for a 9x5 loaf? Sourdough, usually puffy top.

I just measured my loaf, it is 8 1/2 by 4 1/2 and fits with some room to spare.

Q: I am confused by the 4" gusset. Does this mean that it won't accomodate a loaf taller than 4"? I bake a 9"x5" loaf and they tend to be fairly tall.

They are large bags that will easily fit a 9" X 5" loaf. My wife makes a 6" X 10" specialty bread that fits with room to spare. They are also relatively heavy so tear out is no issue. An excellent product.

Q: Ate these bags good for freezing homemade bread?

No offense but they're not really that good of bags, if you want quality I'd buy King Arthur bread bags, they are a very good product.
