What are the dimensions of the base?

3" X 4" ....... approx! also each base comes with 2 clear connectors- so you can connect many bases together!!!

Is there some kind of trick to getting the waist clips to hold the figures? They have no clamping power and pop open at the slightest hint of shifting

I had the same problem so I just tossed them in the trash.

Would these work with gunpla?

They will hold up smaller, 1/144 scale figures if they don't have to heavy of accessories or armaments. But something like the RG Hi Nu or RG Sazabi and larger would easily buckle under the larger weight. The screws can be tightened on the stands, but because they are made of clear plastic, they won't be as strong as normal action bases by Bandai
