Excellent Starter Kit
I am by no means an expert in wet shaving and also have not tested other "starter" kits either. However, this is my introduction to wet shaving and oh boy this is an excellent product. The safety razor is sturdy, looks and feels strong and does the job right. The little bowl and soap included match perfect. I am sure there are better soaps than this one out there but it gets the job done. Decent lather and scent, plus it is soft on the skin. I don't really use the alum block as I already use other products for after shaving but guess is a nice addition. The stand just complemets everything looks so good in the bathroom. The brush first uses lost some bristles and was a little annoying but after maybe 2 or 3 uses it didn't lose any more. The carrying bag is a nice addition although I don't use this kit for travel, so I used the small pouch for other stuff.I am sure there are "better" more "pro" equipment for shaving out there (also more expensive), but this by no means are cheap or crappy. It is a very nice starting kit for the price.

Classy, Bold, Professional, and a great gift.
US Army currently deployed overseas. My girlfriend got me this gift before I shipped out. Such a classy gift. She knows im into the 50s themed stuff but I like to save money (Save a ton on expensive cartridge refills like Gillette) This entire kit is impressive and gives you everything you need to start wetshaving / using a safety razor and its definitely a learning curve as I have never used a safety razor. After 3 months of use tho I have it down were I can get an extremely close shave unlike ever before without cutting myself. (If your new to using a safety razor you will nick yourself alot at first) I use Astra SS double edged Blades and got a pack of 100 blades for $15. I get two shaves with one blade. This has saved me a ton of money these passed 3 months and I still have 7 more months to go. My only complaint was the brush is beginning to degrade. Not the beaver hair, the actual handle is beginning to peel off a clear coat and the wood underneath to begin molding. Unfortunately I do not believe this is due to quality issues as it is more of an issue trying to keep this very nice kit dry while out in the field environment. I do believe a lid for the lather bowl would be a great addition to keep things out of it. So I will be replacing the Brush and the Bowl. But the safety razor, the carey bag, and the stand have all by far met my expectations.Update: I may have gotten a bad brush. The entire ball of badger hair popped out. Not a week after this review but about 4 months of daily use. Will be replacing with a better brush. But everything else the kit comes with is great.

Good Starter Set -- With Caveats
I've been wet shaving since I was around 13 years old. I learned to shave using a straight razor (I think my grandfather was getting back at me for something) and though I have jumped between cartridges, electrics, and wet I always go back to wet shaving.Recently I did a massive clean out of a dozen or more razors, countless soaps, blades, etc to the point where I had no wet shaving products left in the house. I went through my normal cycle of trying the new cartridges that were out there and...well...with every company getting woke I decided to go back to wet shaving. With that out of the way, let's get into the details of this kit.The stand is a nice, quality stand. The dopp bag is a nice canvas material and surprisingly roomy (it seems extremely crowded until you remove all the boxes.)The razor is not an aggressive razor so would work well for a beginner. I would compare it to a Merkur 34C in terms of aggressiveness. Good weight on the handle, though I wish the handle was shorter (longer handles can make getting the tighter spots a bit harder.) It's a fairly standard 3 piece design which makes it easy to clean. It's not a cheap razor and will stand the test of time. The soap — It's sandalwood, and the scent is not overly aggressive. Lathers easily and would work for bowl or face lathering. The blades — Not my favorite brand, but you will get 4 or 5 shaves out of each one. Just make sure you 'rotate' them after each shave (when you disassemble the razor check the orientation of the blade and flip it.)Now, let's talk about the weak part of the kit: The brush. It's a boar hair brush so by its nature it's going to be a bit rough when you start using it. This one, though, feels like it is mostly the lower parts of the mane so it is quite scratchy and irritating on the face. This will soften up overtime but if you face lather...it is not ideal. Not only is it rough, it sheds like crazy. Shave brushes shed for a few days, and that's normal, but this one is losing quite a few hairs. One good point in its favor is it has very little, if any, animal smell. My recommendation here is to swap this brush out for something better if you enjoy wet shaving. The Semogue Excelsior 830 is a great replacement and not expensive. So, overall, it's a good kit and not overpriced unlike some of them out there.
