Q: I have to wonder how many animals get trapped in the leaf net under the water and can't get out?

I wonder if this leaf catcher would catch the chlorine floaty that is in the pool too?

Haha. That’s a negative. I did not like these. The top of it doesn’t float high enough above the water to actually catch anything. Would not buy this item!

Q: Should be placed in from of the filter opening or off to the side?

It doesn't matter where you place it. The opening to the basket is below the water line and therefore no leaves will be collected. Save your money and buy something else.
