How much does this weigh? Description says 8oz, but the smaller version claims to weigh 12.8oz. Looking for something to take backcountry camping.

The smaller version of the Thermos food jar is 16 ounces and more suitable for food for kids since it holds much less portion than the 24 ounce jar.

Can soup be heated in these in a microwave? Or have to heat in something else, then transfer?

You need to heat in something else then transfer it to the thermos. I suggest you don’t close it to tight because when the food is very hot the thermos is very hard to open.
