Thank you for your question. There are 2 main reason for the tilt feature in a beach umbrella. The BUBrella addresses both. First, tilt features are built into beach umbrellas to help with wind resistance. The BUBrella does not need this feature to withstand 35 mph wind. Second, as the sun sets tilting the umbrella helps to shade the setting sun. The beachBUB system uses a different approach to block the rays of the setting sun. Simply tilt the umbrella and base as a single unit. In order to tilt the whole umbrella you first build the base as you normally would making sure that you completely fill and pack the sand as you fill. Insert and open the umbrella. Gently, and with constant pressure, tilt the umbrella into the suns' rays. The umbrella has been tested to tilt up to 45 degrees. When you have blocked the sun all you need to do is re-fill the base if any sand has dribbled out. Also the pyramid shape of the base may become distorted but this will not affect the performance of the base or umbrella.
