Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Last Ronin

A Dark, Emotional Masterpiece That Redefines the TMNT Legacy
The Last Ronin is not just another Ninja Turtles story—it’s a bold, post-apocalyptic reimagining that delivers emotional weight, brutal action, and a powerful meditation on loss, legacy, and redemption. If you grew up with the Turtles, this hits like a gut punch in the best way.Set in a dystopian future, the story unfolds like a noir revenge saga. It’s Old Man Logan meets The Dark Knight Returns, but with the soul of TMNT intact. The writing by Kevin Eastman, Peter Laird, and Tom Waltz is tight and emotionally resonant. The art by Esau and Isaac Escorza is gritty, cinematic, and perfectly suited to the tone. Every panel feels like a battle-scarred memory, and the action sequences are brutal without losing narrative clarity. This is a love letter to the Mirage-era fans, but it’s also accessible to new readers. You don’t need deep TMNT lore to appreciate the stakes—just a heart for stories about resilience and brotherhood. The collected edition is beautifully produced, with high-quality paper and bonus content that adds depth to the experience. If you’re a collector, this belongs on your shelf.I cannot wait until Hollywood has the courage and intelligence to adopt this into a feature length film.

A must have for TMNT fans
It’s hard to be thorough without spoiling anything. I’m going to be vague but accurate. Love the story. Love the dark environment. Great drawing. Kept me reading till the end. A must have for TMNT fans and the dark Dark Knight era.

Amazing!
Wow, just wow. This was by far the best book of this type I have ever purchased. The book quality itself far exceeded my expectations. It is larger than I thought it would be, the paper is thick and high grade, and the cover is top notch. The art work is incredible and the story is even better. Eastman and Laird really delivered with this one, and I honestly can't say enough about it. I read it all in 2 days and I already wish I had more. As a die hard TMNT fan from the 90s I very highly recommend book amd would consider it a must have for collectors.

A great TMNT collection.
I hadn’t read TMNT since the early 90’s but I had heard how incredible The Last Ronin was. Picked it up and was not disappointed. They did a great job of explain the world and what was going on, so it was good for a guy like me who hasn’t read the books in thirty years. Very fast paced, incredible artwork, a more adult story. I recommend for anyone who loves the Turtles.

A one of a kind comics reading experience…
First, let me get the bad out of the way. And it has nothing to do with the actual book.I first read this via my local library. I was so blown away by the storytelling and art that I decided, before I had even finished, that I needed a copy in my collection. I ordered this book three separate times and it took three tries to finally get a book without damage to the cover. The first copy had a nick in the spine. The second appeared to be dropped and was dented so badly the back cover had cracked. I’ve included images so you can see what I mean.It was, at worst, annoying. However, as I am writing a review that encompasses the entire shopping experience as well as the product it should be noted. Now for the good. This story is based on an idea that original TMNT creators had during the height of the Turtles popularity and based on the question… where would the Turtles be 30 years after defeating The Shredder?Eastman, Laird, and Waltz’s answer to that question is a complex and nuanced story, scripted by Eastman and Waltz, about what it means to outlive those you love and how the ghosts can drive us forward. For good or ill. With full color artwork by Ben Bishop and Esau & Isaac Escorza, the main story unfolds as the last remaining turtle, The Ronin, returns to a ‘present day’ Bladerunner-esque New York on a quest to avenge his fallen family. As he is confronted by old acquaintances and the ghosts of his own shame and guilt, the Ronin reveals his past through flashbacks that are exquisitely illustrated by Eastman in the noir style that made the original run of the comics iconic. Each of these sequences makes it clear that the man’s love and passion for his creation has only grown stronger over the years.I can’t overstate my love for this franchise. As a fan of the turtles since the 80s, they play a part in some of my most treasured memories. From spending hours playing with my Turtles figures and playsets to begging the youth leader at church to take us to see the original movie on opening weekend as a treat for winning the regional bible knowledge competition that year… the TMNT have been a constant love in my life. This story plays all the right nostalgic notes without rehashing the same material and goes on to add its own mark on the Turtles much loved mythos. It goes into its low register to deliver a dark and gritty dirge of loss and pain, flitters whimsically through comedic moments, and crescendos in an aria of victory.Bottom line: If you are a fan of the TMNT and comics, your collection is not complete without this beautiful hardcover edition of Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles - The Last Ronin.

Very dark and unique take on the Turtles.
What a great story. Has a very dark and serious tone, very different from the cartoon. Very well done though and want more. Maybe they can do a multiverse storyline next.
