Q: in my experience, the smoke from a wood burning fire really chars the heck out of any pot. does the solo stove mitigate this in any way?

When I used mine I was burning Birch which burns great, but because of the oil content, it really blackens the bottom of the pot. About half of it washed off with no problem at all. The other half took some scrubbing and some serious elbow grease. 98% of the char came right off the pot. The other 2% seems to be stuck on there for now. So yes, it will "char" your pot. But if you use wood as a fuel source with any stove, you'll have some char and ash to clean here and there. Over all, I would still say that the Solo Stove and Solo Pot are a pretty dang good set up.

Q: Can the solo stove be used indoors in an emergency situation?

Yes you can use this indoors! However, given that it will smoke your apartment up why would you want to? You could use sterno to avoid the smoke but since Amazon sells a sterno stove for $5.41, why would you want to spend $70 on this?

Q: What country is this stove made in?

Solo stoves are made in China. Heck no, not ever will I purchase one.

Q: Does anyone know if you are allowed to use this stove for back-country camping in places where open fires are prohibited? (ex. National Parks)

It depends... I am currently researching this topic for a trip to Yosemite, and it appears that it is ok as long as "Fire Restrictions" are not in effect. When Fire Restrictions ARE in effect (and it is different classification for over/under 6000 ft), wood fires, including "twig stoves", are not allowed. Also, wood Fires are never allowed above 9600 feet. I'm going to Yosemite in June, so we should be ok. I'm buying an alcohol burner to take as a backup though....And again, this is for Yosemite - other parks may have different rules. Also, this seems to be commonly known as "twig stove".
