The Scoop on Exway 36T Compatibilities w/ 44T Cloudwheels
So here’s the scoop on Cloudwheels and compatibilities with the Exway 36T set-ups like the Wave Riot. I don’t understand why Exway, Cloudwheels and various e-skate experts don’t lay out these details.Check your Exway Wave or Flex for whether they have the 36T (36 teeth) wheel gear set-up. You can tell by looking at the belts. The belts will be 15mm width and marked as #255.These 105 & 120 mm Cloudwheels require the 44T (44 teeth) wheel gears, two on either side, and with matching axle interfaces to plug into the Cloudwheels. The 44T gears, axle interfaces, plus #280 belts with motor covers are what the “kit” option includes. When you upgrade from 36T to 44T on the wheel gears, the belts have to be longer to account for the larger diameter gears on the 44T spec. In turn, this means that the belt angle changes between the motor gears and the wheel gears. That new angle causes the belt to grind against the standard motor housings or the ones provided in the Cloudwheels upgrade kit. So, if you’re going to upgrade from a native 36T to the 44T set-up, you will need to remove and operate without the motor covers, or do special mods to the motor covers to give the belt and wheel clearances necessary. This means that it is mechanically possible to adapt the Exway Wave Riot, which is natively 36T, to install the 120mm Cloudwheels on them. The 44T wheel gears and #280 belts will swap in with moderate disassembly and the 120mm Cloudwheels will pop on to the rear axle with relatively little effort, and onto the front axle with virtually no effort. The problem is this: operating the Exway Wave Riot with 120 mm Cloudwheels is going to result in “wheel bite” where the deck of the board contacts the moving wheels while you are banking on your board to negotiate turns. This will jam the wheels and throw you off your board, and depending on your speed and what you are doing (like cruising and turning near automobile traffic), could cause serious injury or death. So, just because you can install 120mm Cloudwheels on an Exway Wave Riot doesn’t mean you should. The Exway Wave is not riser compatible, BTW, so mechanical mods to increase deck clearance for the 120mm wheels are not possible. The Exway Wave hub (direct drive motor) model doesn’t use belts and gear extensions and has its own Cloudwheels adapted for the hub, and which is offered in only 105mm diameter. So back to the Exway Wave Riot … the 105mm 44T Cloudwheels can be used with it after you upgrade to 44T configuration, and are safe from causing wheel bite with normal use (w/o excessive banking on turns) and normal stiffness on the bushings and axles. Just remember as I said above that you will have to remove the motor covers or modify them to avoid the gear belts from grinding on them.Note, however, that there are special 105mm Cloudwheels that can be had just for the Wave Riot, and which will work with 36T wheel gears, #255 belts, and the standard motor covers. I haven’t seen them sold directly by Wonder Wheel but they appear to be available from Exway directly as manufactured by Wonder Wheel. I recommend getting the accessory kit as the axle interfaces are different than standard for 36T.I hope this helps save a ton of confusion from users and keeps everyone safe.
