What are the slits in the inside flap for?

They are cardholders. I can't seem to attach a pic to this answer but it works like this. You put the flap on the OUTSIDE of the journal when you close it. Then you can fit credit cards or business cards or whatever through the horizontal slits and the corner slits fit the corner of your cards.

Is it suitable for a gift?

This is very suitable for a gift. It can be used by people who love to journal their day, traveling experiences or as in my granddaughters case she love to draw interesting things she sees.

What material is the cover made out of? Is it genuine leather or something man made?

In the product details, it says that the cover material is made of PU Leather - not real leather
