Does the stool swivel when seated?

Yes it does! I used it at my desk for a while, but because I always span the same way when I wanted to go do something else, after a while the stool would get higher and higher and I'd have to spin it back down! It's great. Very solid. Easy to put together. You may need to tighten up the screws from time to time but it comes with a decent screwdriver too. I currently use it as a table!

Is this all solid beech ?

It seems to all be made of the same wood - it's very good quality. I stopped using it as a stool and use it as a table! Very sturdy.

This may be a silly question, buthow do you fit the spindle? can you undo the safety screw? otherwise how do you thread the spindle through the holes?

Yes - when you put it together at first, you take out the safety screw. X
