Why does it require X pounds per Y acres, and repeated doses? As long as nutrients (muck) are available, the bacteria should multiply exponentially.

The goal of all beneficial bacteria products such as MuckAway is to maintain a much higher level of beneficial bacteria than would occur naturally in the pond to dissolve the sludge that builds up over years. Without repeated doses.. the level of bacteria/enzymes gradually declines to more "normal" levels- not enough to actually dissolve existing sludge build-up. If this wasn't the case, ponds would never build-up sludge because "natural levels" of bacteria would dissolve it as fast as it collects. I've used this for years in our ponds and can vouch for its effectiveness! The area just off the dock is really gross and mushy every spring and once we treat it with this it is a nice firm, "clean" bottom. We use the whole line of products and find them the best of the lot.

Can the product be used on a drained pond? The muck is exposed and very...mucky.

This product is designed to be applied to pond and lake water, not applied directly to dry muck. If the pond has been drained and muck is exposed, the best course of action is to simply remove it physically.
