Love, Growing Up, and... Christmas!
As Volume 6 of *Kimi ni Todoke* begins, we have the awkward situation of Chizu (whom Ryu cares about) arriving to visit their house and seeing the elder brother, Toru, (whom Chizu has a crush on)... and Toru's new fiance. Needless to say, the situation is quite awkward.Chizu is upset about this turn of events and this, in turn, upsets Sawako and Yano, who want to comfort her but don't know how to do so. And in the midst of this comes some sage and true advice from Kazehaya. Sometimes it doesn't matter if it's awkward and you don't know what to say. Sometimes, you just have to be there for someone. That very act is often more than enough. Through this ordeal, Chizu becomes closer with both Yano and Sawako on the one hand, and with Ryu on the other. She also does some growing up.Of course the quiet romance between Kazehaya and Sawako continues to bloom. This is to be expected, obviously, as it's the main point of the series, and they are the "alpha couple" if you will. But it is fun to see because of the sweetness of it. There is no real rushing forward and such. Instead, it's a slow and steady coming together. The only really annoying part is that Kazehaya has obviously been in love with Sawako even before she began to develop feelings for him. The thing keeping them apart is that they both are shy and uncertain about where the other stands. On top of this, Sawako would never believe that someone like the super-popular Kazehaya would be into her. But even this is only mildly annoying as the dance they are in to slowly come towards each other is a very entertaining and endearing one to watch. The only real issue I have with this volume is two-fold. First of all, the Christmas party was entirely a Japanese pseudo-Valentine's Day interpretation, which is to be expected. If it was only that, I wouldn't have had an issue. Different cultures view things different ways, and perhaps my seeing other stories have acknowledgment of various other parts of the meaning of Christmas has spoiled me. I can't dictate to other cultures, just hope they are respectful and also they turn to God.But the thing is on top of this, for a joke, Kazehaya sees Sawako in a weird pose while she is contemplating stuff, and he thinks she's in a cult because she *looks* like she is praying. (She's not, she's just in a weird pose.) It's not seriously his thoughts, and it's only a gag, but it still annoyed me. I know that cults are an issue in Japan, and the country is so overwhelmingly secular, but I would like the same kindness I try to give to others. In truth, it's not too much of a bother to me, and I am nearly certain that the mangaka never had mocking religion in general as her goal.Despite the above, really *minor* and inconsequential issue, I really enjoyed this volume. The poignancy, yet lack of melodrama in the story, as well as the sweet resolutions and how this moved different plot threads forward, made the scenes compelling.I can't wait to see these characters grow and come closer together.Rating: 4.5/5 Stars.
