StrikeAlert HD Personal Lightning Detector

The media could not be loaded. I've found out why sometimes battery life gauge gives false reading.It actually differs from battery to another.People - check the batteries capacity before you buy it - i have Panasonic & Energizer.If you use two twin none rechargable Panasonic Alkaline Gold Batteries from the same box & the same capacity it will give you the correct battery life gauge.But if you mix different capacities or maybe mix one battery with less life than the other it may also trigger false battery gauge reading.You need to make sure that both batteries are the same capacity ( read battery info before buying it ) like 2500mah & 2500mah and secondly if they are rechargable batteries like Energizer make sure that the twin batteries are from the same box - same capacity & recharge them both at the same time to give the chance for the correct battery reading :)Also an aged battery will have a lower capacity which may trigger lower battery life gauge.Edit :It appears that it will only give a correct battery reading if you used a ( maybe a certain kind ) none rechargable batteries.

In working with the Boy Scouts and spending camping activities outside in Florida. The threat of lighting strikes at a very high levels putting all the boys and leaders at risk. With the StrikeAlert I was able to detect to monitor strikes far enough out to get all the boys to a safe location.

This is one of the better portable handheld units in its price range. The feature set is very good, especially the ability to track the distance and intensity of the lighting over time.This unit is marketed principally to people who work, play, or adventure outdoors: Hikers, outdoor sports events, construction workers and the like.I spend 90% of my time in my house or inside other buildings, 8% in the car, and 2% outside. So I asked the question: "Do you get false positives inside the house?" The answers I received were "no" or "very little."Based on those answers, I bought the unit. However, based on my own experience, both in the house inches from a window or in the car, the number of false positives make it unusable for me. False positives in the house result when nearby switches are tuned on. It is much worse inside a motor vehicle.So for my use, it has not worked for me. For those using the device some distance from a building or motor vehicle, I'm sure it performs as advertised.I received this unit just hours before a storm passed through central Florida. I had a chance to sit on an open front porch of a local library as the storm approached. At that location, at least 15 feet away from any electrical circuits, I had no false positives and it recorded lightning as the storm approached. I was at that location for the sole purpose of testing the performance of the unit - nothing that I would routinely do.Based on the very limited usability of the unit in my situation, I will be returning it to make better use of over $170.

Accurate and user friendly

Although this item did not work for our construction jobsite needs, it appears it would work for normal outdoor recreational use just fine. We needed a more industrial type detector to work around explosives on our jobsite and this didn't work for that but overall it was very easy to use and the seller has been helpful in accommodating our return, thank you!

I pulled out my StrikeAlert HD as soon as it arrived and put the batteries in. I was scrolling through the menus when it started to alert me there was lightning. Sure enough, a storm was rolling in. It was fun to watch the storm - just wish we'd gotten some much needed rain! The StrikeAlert worked great!

I like the 360 degree lightning detection, but it goes through batteries too quickly, every few days

I bought this unit several weeks ago and it performs much better than the StrikeAlert Personal Lightning Detector. I've owned the smaller unit for years and this new model outperforms it in several ways. First the new unit is much more sensitive. I placed both units in operation during an active weather day and the StrikeAlert HD picked up strikes the other unit did not. Also, the HD model does not seem to suffer from interference like the smaller unit. All in all I would recommend this unit.
