Fantastic Leveled Readers for Growing Readers
Fantastic Leveled Readers for Growing Readers!I absolutely love these Scholastic Leveled Readers! I originally got them for my 5-year-old niece, but I've also used the same sets with both my daughters, and they've always been a hit. What I really appreciate about this set is how well each level builds on the last. It's truly guided reading at its best, slowly introducing and reinforcing new phonics and reading skills. The books are the perfect length too – short enough to keep little ones engaged without them losing interest, but long enough to actually develop those crucial reading skills.A super fun bonus feature is that kids can color in the books! It adds another layer of interaction and makes them even more appealing. If you're looking for a great way to support your child's early reading journey, you really can't go wrong with these.

Lots of learning opportunities
This collection of books is well organized and color coded for gradual rise in difficulty. Each individual book is short but with clear lesson. There are many books in each color coded group .Added value is that each book can be used as a coloring book also. More educational opportunities .Great value for this collection.

The size is great for her little-ish hands
I don't normally leave feedback, but in this case I thought I should. I read a lot of the reviews for this product on amazon and I think some of the negative comments may discourage people from buying these books - I know I almost didn't buy them. It turns out that many of the negative feedback that I saw (books are too small, stories are too short, black and white pictures only) turned out to be fabulous positives for my daughter. The size is great for her little-ish hands, the stories are short enough to keep her attention for the purpose (engage her in the print and the story), the word use within the stories (repeating, rhyming, themed) are helping her learn to recognize sounds and letters, and the black and white illustrations keep it simple and are not distracting - I like how she looks at the letters as I'm running my finger along the bottom of words. She certainly did comment on the fact that the images were black and white, and not in color, but I took the queue from another reviewer and told my daughter that we could color the pictures any time she wanted to, and that was sufficient for us to move on with the reading. I have to say I am 100% happy with this purchase and I think the books will be very helpful in turning my daughter into a reader. I'm glad I read the positive reviews, otherwise I would have missed out on these awesome teaching tools.

Great for 2nd graders!
You will have to read the books to your average kindergarten or 1st grade student. However, it is great for energetic 2nd graders who need something to read just before bedtime.

Perfect for beginning readers! What they use in schools!
In my daughter's kindergarten class, her teacher would send books home to practice with depending on grade level, and since my kid would forget to bring her book baggie home all the time, it was helpful to have these at home. Her teacher used these exact books in her class, so there was continuity at home, and my daughter went from not being able to read at all, to reading the D leveled books with no problem. We've got a few weeks left and her teacher told us she can move onto E books, and that we should continue practicing with C's and D's over the summer just to keep her brain active and she can remember all the reading strategies they've learned throughout the year. For the people complaining that they are tiny and thin, and that the illustrations are lacking--these books are perfect for beginning readers. There aren't any distractions from complicated pictures, and the pictures are simple enough so the kid can pick out their "picture clues", and then go back to focusing on the words. If you are unfamiliar with leveled readers, I can see why you might be disappointed, but if you want simple books that will actually help your child learn to read, these are perfect, especially for the price. I'm only wishing I could find such a large box of E-F readers, but they seem to go up to $1/book and are sold in smaller packs. Do yourself a favor, get these, and practice every night. You'll have a fully independent reader in just a few months, and boy will you be proud!

Excellent Content
These 60 little books are small; they fit into a shoebox. The illustrations are simple line drawings. Don't let the simplicity fool you. These books are small, but they're mighty! Think of them like matches; they can light a fire.I'm an early childhood educator, and I've taught many kids to read. However, these were bought for my 3 grandkids, ages 4, 5, and 6. ( Yes, things are busy around their house! ) All 3 kids loved them. The simple stories are interesting. They strike a nice balance between phonetic reading and sight words.Stories have repetition to encourage pre-readers to look for visual clues. My 5 year old was thrilled, saying, "Grandma, reading is fun!!"I recommend gifting them along with a special shoebox, and withholding the crayons. Mine all wanted to start coloring in them. But we may do that later on, or let them choose favorite pictures to copy. These books, along with some loving attention, can do way more than you might think. Highly recommend!

NOT decodable phonics readers fir emerging readers
These books are not phonics readers that an emerging reader can sound out. Even the level A books contain irregular spelling patterns that are not decodable and cause frustration for new readers (words like "mouse", "eyes", "castle" and many others are not decodable, meaning they are not able to be sounded out like decodable words). I took the time and rewrote the sentences in many of them (example, changed mouse to rat because "rat" can be sounded out by a new reader), but I would not have purchased them if I would have known how many irregular words there were in these. I would not recommend for anyone because by the time the child is ready for irregular spelling patterns, they will find these books boring.
