Don't throw away the c-cell batteries yet!
I bought this as a general-purpose light for household use. Yes, a $5 cheapo will do fine for 99% of what I'll ever need it for, but I'm a 'flashlight-nut' and the technology behind this unique design is fascinating to me. The LED is actually mounted on the lens pointing backwards TOWARDS the user! The entire beam is then reflected on the conical mirror out towards what you're looking at. Apparently, this reduces the amount of wasted light and 'spill'(what most LEDs are notorious for- a wide coverage area). For power failures and wanting to be seen(i.e. walking the dog at night) this is great, but for long-distance visibility or cutting through fog/smoke this light really 'shines' -pun intended. The beam reminds me of my old zenon Maglite. Very tight and projected far. What Pelican has done is give you the battery life of an LED with the pattern of a zenon. I like that it uses standard c-cells(3 to be presice) as d-cells can get heavy and the size of the grip is more comfortable with the c in my opinion. That's not to say the light feels flimsy- in fact, it has a good heft to it and could probably be used for self-defense in an emergency(although there's no jagged edges like in the 'tactical' lights).I've shown an example of the light shining down a hallway at 12ft. I'd like to offer an even greater distance shot, but this corresponds to the standard 'beam shot' in my flashlight reviews for comparison. You will see a large circle with little light outside that. Any extra you see is light being reflected off the white door in a tight hallway. Puts the light right where you want it and nowhere else! Finally, the color says 'yellow' in the description/picture, but I find it to be more of a day glow green/yellow in person. Think what you see cyclists or construction workers wearing. Can't think of any negatives so 5 stars it is!Jae

I'd heard about these lights, figured I'd try one.
I've heard of the "recoil" lights, never had the opportunity to try one. I've had other Pelican lights and a few of their cases and was happy with them. Needing a new flashlight for work, I decided to give this one a shot.It is good and bright. Haven't used it long enough to use up a set of batteries, but should have decent battery life. With the LED firing backwards into the reflector, there is almost no light spill. On the plus side, all that spilled light that would normally get lost, is collected and added to the main beam. The downside is, it's kind of like tunnel vision. If it's real dark out, the only thing you see is what the beam is pointing at. The other downside: cost. yes, it's more expensive than comparable 3-C cell flashlights, but being a Pelican, it's built like a tank.

Very reliable
Our company uses Pelican Flashlights so I was already familiar with its durability and reliability. Working in underground tunnels it's really important to have a product that will not fail you.

Disappointing
For the price, this light really isn't very bright, nor is it a true full spectrum. It more or less served my purposes, but I could have gotten (did get, in fact) equal results with a less expensive light.

Great flashlight for hazardous conditions
Great flashlight made in America and is safe to use in a flammable environment. They are used in every oil refinery I've ever delivered to and I use it while delivering liquid hydrogen.

Great
Pelican lights are great products. We live off the beaten path and our electricity is the last to get fixed when there is a problem. I have two of these and highly recommend them.

Excellent
I use this flashlight at night on the water from my boat and it is excellent. You can see great distances clearly and it cuts through the haze. Excellent and I highly recommend it.
