Q: Will it work for kitchen sinks?

Yes, I think it would, as long as your drain opening is standard size. It works well in my laundry tub which has a drain larger than a bath tub but smaller than a kitchen drain. The stopper is a fairly generous size

Q: ok, am i missing something....? just bought this and it doesn't work, at all. lays on top of the drain and doesn't create any semblance of a seal.

I use this in my kitchen sink and it does need water in the sink to create the pressure needed to seal. I find the seal is better if both the sink and stopper are wet. It just barely covers my drain so I must make sure it is positioned correctly. I have tried it in my bath. It is laughable. My tub drain is towards the side. There is not enough flat space to accommodate the stopper. It looks like it will work but it doesn't. My shower has a very rough surface which allows imperceptible amounts of water to seep under the stopper. No this stopper will not work for several reasons BUT don't blame the stopper. It has requirements for use just like anything else.

Only if The hair catcher fits into the drain. This stopper works best if it is flush with the tub.
