"Steven Wilson has announced details of a live film - Home Invasion: In Concert At The Royal Albert Hall – released on multiple formats from the 2nd November 2018 through Eagle Rock Entertainment and limited edition deluxe vinyl via Caroline International on 20th March 2019. At the end of March 2018, Steven Wilson played a sell-out three night residency at one of the world’s most iconic venues: London’s Royal Albert Hall. Coming at the tail end of a lengthy European tour, these concerts were the crowning achievement of an incredible seven-month period that began with the release of Wilson’s fifth album, To The Bone (“His best and most complete solo album yet” Classic Rock 4*). Released in August 2017, To The Bone charted at No 3 in the UK and went top 10 all over Europe, rapidly becoming the biggest selling record in Wilson’s singular thirty-year recording career. Home Invasion: In Concert At The Royal Albert Hall captures the last show of the three-night run and includes nearly 3 hours of live performance. The concert film release is put together from footage filmed on multiple cameras from every conceivable angle in the auditorium and on the stage, and the sound has been specially mixed by Steven in both 5.1 surround sound and stereo. It’s the perfect document of one of the UK’s most uncompromising artists - someone who remains “resolutely independent… the most successful British artist you’ve never heard of” (The Telegraph)."

Mr. Wilson forges ahead
In the world of new progressive rock there are fans of Steven Wilson forever whingeing about the demise of his previous band, Porcupine Tree, and his betrayal of 'difficult' music for pastures new. It's all chatroom rubbish. of course. Any artist worth his salt wants to move on, try new things and build on what they've done before. This DVD/Blu Ray of one of his three-nights at the Royal Albert Hall in 2018 showcases the full range of his career high points, with a hugely-talented band (featuring Nick Beggs on bass - almost worth the price of entry on his own!) , inventive use of screen projections and stunning sound. There's plenty of tricksy time signatures, brutal riffing and the presence of the brilliant Ninet Tayeb on several songs. You'd have to be a real grinch of a prog fan not to find this all mind-blowing stuff, but some people like their familiar hidey-holes of "He was better before..."Oh, and watch out for the dancers during 'Permanating' - old-prog fans will blow a gasket!

Essential
I knew of Steve Wilson and Porcupine Tree but hadn't heard much of his or their music, so decided to buy this as an entrypoint. What a great DVD! The music is fantastic, his voice is much better than I'd expected for a multi-instrumentalist and the sound is as you'd expect for the go-to remasterer of classic prog rock back catalogues. But what makes this special is the band, especially 4- and 5-string bassist and Chapman Stick wielder Nick Beggs who is outstanding. Apart from the gig itself there's a further 30 mins of rehearsals (songs not in the set) and an engaging interview with the man himself who is funny, articulate and self-deprecating. At this price not to be missed.Edit: Stupid me. Of course it's a great band. I've since learnt that Adam Holzman played with Miles Davis and Ninet Tayeb is an international star in her own right.
