I'm clearly doing something wrong; i've placed the plate on inside of thin case, and then the disc on the outside; isn't this correct?

Plate goes on outside of case so it can directly connect with mount. You may not even need the plate if you have a compatible phone and case. Watch video above.

Why are customers complaining about overheating? I have other products from you guys and my buddies and we love them. Have you fixed this issue?

I have a 14 and no issues. All Wireless chargers get warm/hot. Really depends on your perception. Typically thicker case are the issue. the further the distance from charging coil the phone receiver you will have more heat. We only recommend Mag Safe cases for apple. also the iphone 14's magnets and Apples real cases have much stronger magnets.

Will Apple CarPlay transmit through this or does the phone still have to be plugged in?

Your stereo system would need to have wireless car play capability. If you need to use the usb cord for CarPlay then most likely your stereo doesn't have wireless car play.
