Can this be used without a tripod satisfactorily?

It can on low power. It is bulky though. You can get a cheap handheld tripod and it will work fine.

When doing target shooting can you see the bullet fly through the air?

I don't know about seeing a vapor trail, but when shooting at long range, an observer positioned behind the shooter can watch the parabolic wake disturbance (rising then falling to the target) created in air by the supersonic bullet as it travels downrange, similar to watching a wake in water as a boat travels. It is not possible for the human eye to actually see the bullet itself, to my knowledge.
