とてもシンプルな英語で書かれているので、スイスイと読み進めていくことができます。気合を入れずに読める英語の本をお探しの方にオススメです。主人公のミリーと雇い主のニーナ、どちらの視点から語られる物語も面白く、途中で先の展開が何となく予想できてしまいますが、最後はまた一捻りあります。本物の"サイコ"は誰なのか…続編も読みたくなる作品です。

登場人物たちの心の動きの描写がすごくいい加減で、そういう事は気にしないで読むべきサスペンススリラーかなと思う。特に終盤になると、「え？ えっ？ ええっ？ そんなことになっちゃって、それで、いいの？」みたいなびっくりするような、ちょっと呆れるような。ただ因果応報の枠組みの中でストーリーが組み立てられているのか、読み終わった後にイヤな気分にはなりません。英語はとにかく平易で読みやすいの極地。数時間の楽しい時間を得られました。

My first Freida book and this piqued my interest for thrillers! You won’t be able to put this book down :)

The plot itself is a little bit complicated, but not difficult to follow at all. This is mostly because the author’s writing style, which is quite straightforward, without unnecessary embellishments. Even non native speakers, like myself, can easily get into the story. When reading it, you feel like you’re there in the story.

訳ありの女性が、裕福な一家の家に住み込みの家政婦として働くことになり、感情の起伏が激しい雇い主の女性から理不尽な扱いを受けながら、次第にその家族の秘密を暴いていく…というのがこの小説のあらすじです。物語が進むにつれ、少しずつ明かされていく一家の秘密や、主人公自身の過去には引き込まれるものがあります。ただ正直なところ、雇い主の女性による主人公への仕打ちがあまりにも酷く、ミステリーとしての面白さよりもイライラの方が勝ってしまいました。たとえ事情があったにせよ、なぜそこまで過激な言動を取る必要があるのか、疑問が残ります。レビュー数の多さにつられて期待値を上げすぎると、拍子抜けするかもしれません。率直に言うと、それほど面白いとは思えませんでした。どこか「火曜サスペンス劇場」のような作り物めいた展開で、リアリティには欠けます。良かった点を挙げるなら、登場するイケメンキャラクターの存在と、真面目で感情移入しやすい主人公でしょう。ただ、その感情移入のしやすさが逆に仇となり、読んでいて夫人に対するストレスが倍増してしまいます。女性が主人公でイケメン・キャラが登場するので女性読者向きの作品だと思います。男性にはあまりおすすめしづらいです。また、英語の表現は比較的平易なので、英語が得意でない方でも読みやすいと思います。

From the prologue of this thriller, I was tugged into a world where I had to whisper why and what repeatedly. I catch myself from detailing for it to keep those interested in this story there. Instead, I tell a gist. A young woman wandering around with desperation to take a decent job is invited to a lavish parlour to have a job interview for housekeeper. The interviewer, the wife whose husband is rich and owns the a property, also in desperation with hidden facts makes a choice to hire her with secret roles which chill you. You read this domestically sadistic drama to have the thaw of who they are and what happened with and for them.
