Q: how long are the ropes?

From the manufacturer: The ropes are spec'd to be 24" (610 mm) but allow for some minor variation. They are 3mm static cord which is different than (better than) "paracord". It has a slippery feel and keeps its round shape making it easy to untie knots after practicing.

From the manufacturer: The twenty knots listed in previous answers are correct. However, as of about September 1, 2018 the Sheepshank has been replaced with a good Stopper Knot. Although the Sheepshank has been included in nearly every knot reference since the days of sail, it is in reality seldom used and a dangerous knot at that (loss of tension can spill the knot). The Alpine Butterfly Knot, which is on the card set, can be used for the same purpose as a sheepshank (rope shortening and isolation of a bad section of rope) and is totally trustworthy.

Q: Would this be a good kit for kids to have for a long road trip?

I would not recommend this kit for anything more than making sample knots for a boy or girl scout badge. If you want a good long trip craft get a simple pattern for the square knot used to make a plant hanger. These are available on line and the cording is available on Amazon, as a instruction booklets. The simplest project takes about 3 hours for most children to complete.

Q: How thick are the ropes?

From the manufacturer: The ropes are 3mm climber's accessory cordage, about an eighth of an inch diameter, and about 24" long. The rope was specifically sourced because it is slippery and maintains its round shape (unlike "550 paracord" or shoelaces) which help make it easy to untie your knots. The rope will fit through the grommet in the cards. The carabiner is for practicing tying knots to an object.
