Q: does this need to be hard wired?

No...it does need a wifi adapter (sold separately, of course) we haven't felt the need for it yet since if you make a coffee drink from the comfort of your bed, you better make sure that there is a cup under the spout. The extra mule container is a must have. One that you can put in and out of the fridge quickly

Q: does it work with coffee powder?

Yes, the Jura E8 has a bypass to enable drinks to be made with preground coffee.

Q: How easy is it to keep the jura clean

The primary cleaning processes are (1) Descaling, (2) Cleaning the brewing chambers, (3) Cleaning the frothing unit, and (4) cleaning the milk system. The first is eliminated if you use the Clearyl filters (my approach), the second requires a proprietary cleaning tablet and is automated (takes about 20 minutes). The third requires a tubing brush (not provided) and takes a couple of minutes. I do not do the fourth (not necessary if the third is done each day of use). The Jura tells you when to do all but the third. I pay attention to the first two and ignore the fourth. One other cleaning issue is the milk tube. I clean mine with a long-handled tubing brush about once a week (five minutes at most). Rather than cleaning it, you can just buy some bulk tubing and replace the milk tube occasionally (milk solids build up inside the tube over time which the milk cleaning process mitigates but does not eliminate). You will spend more time filling the bean hopper, filling the water tank, removing the grounds, and emptying the drip tray than you will cleaning the machine.

Q: This may sound silly but does the piano white version of the jura e8 get coffee stains? will it stay looking fresh? not that i would not wipe it down.
