The daily portion of the day should be adjusted according to the climate, age of your dog, and exercise intensity. Puppies, Pregnancy/Nursing Mother Dogs: Give about twice the dose in 2 to 3 times a day (depending on the number of pupies and nursing puppies). If you switch from traditional hoods, you can move slowly over 5 days to prevent stomach discomfort. Always prepare a clean and fresh drinking water for your dog's health

If you have several &/or large dogs then it might be worth it to get the 2lb bag to use as treats. While there are no preservatives in it, it is air dried to last a while. I've never noticed any difference in the food between the day I opened it and the day at the end of the month that I feed the last cup out of the bag. So I wouldn't really worry about it going bad or anything.
