A surgeon never uses a Swiss Army knife. An astronomer never studies our universe with binoculars. No matter the industry specialized tooling is required to optimize performance. This is often overlooked in audio design where general-purpose IC-based opamps are widely used. Our opamps, are specifically designed to optimize audio performance, and our V6 discrete opamps [+] are our sharpest tools yet.

Audiophile CD player upgraded with discrete opamps.
Installed two sets of Burson Dual channel V6 Vivid opamps along with a set of Burson Single channel V6 Vivid's in a RCD-991 Rotel CD player. This CD player uses the legendary Pacific Microsonics PMD-100 HDCD decoder along with a set of stock Burr-Brown PCM-63P converter chips. The original main power supply filter capacitors in this CD player were replaced with 10,000 uf Nichicon gold caps which increased the capacity of it's stock configuration two fold. This player had a dampening modification performed by John Allison of Allison Dynamics 10 years ago. Dither is adjustable on this player. Dither settings 4 and 5 sound the best on this modified player. The Burson upgrade replaced 10 opamps in the signal path with totally discrete class A devices in the analog output stage. The Burson devices come with gold plated pins and gold plated detachable sockets which were soldered to the board. Burson V6 vivid's are made with surface mount high grade fets, resistors, and capacitors. A friend of mine who was a tech for Audio Research Corp for many years ( recently retired) helped install these devices on the circuit board. The two of us did before and after listening tests. After the Burson V6's were installed in this player we both experienced a dramatic improvement in sound stage, dynamics, and imaging. The sound stage is now significantly more three dimensional. There is now a full and smooth upper end extension with a more defined bass and mid bass. The overall sonic presentation of the RCD-991 is now even more analog sounding than before with excellent tonal balance. The sonic signature of this player has a very black background and note decay has breathtaking realism. Our before and after listening tests were conducted using the Rotel RCD-991 CD player connected to an Audio Research modified LS7 tube linestage (w/ Stealth coupling caps) and an Audio Research VS115 tube amp ( modified with Stealth coupling caps). Loudspeakers used are Vandersteen 3A signatures. This CD player is now reference grade IMHO. This upgrade for the above application was well worth the investment.
