The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm

A great book for kids who are grieving or dealing with depression
I have used this book a couple of years with a group of kids who are grieving the loss of a loved one. When I found this book I was immediately drawn to the fact that it talks about the people around us who are there to help us when we are sad, worried, anxious, etc. I read this book to the kids and then we do an activity where they trace there hand and write on it all of the people that they can go to for support. The book is wonderfully written and illustrated and I plan to keep it in my library for many years to come.My one complaint is that it appears to be out of print now, so it is very hard to find a copy of it that isn't super expensive. If they ever republish this book, I will definitely purchase a brand new copy of it.

Cleverly written and illustrated.
The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm by LeVar Burton (Author), Susan Schaefer Bernardo (Author), Courtenay Fletcher (Illustrator) is a children's book written for ages five to seven. I gave it four stars.Mica mouse told her Papa she was frightened by the storm. She trembled under her blanket. So Papa told her a story in his soothing voice. It was a story about love, hope and good friends helping each other. The illustrations are cleverly done and I enjoyed the rhymes. "'We're all on this earth to learn and to grow,' a wise old tortoise chimed in from below. 'Allowing yourself to start feeling your feelings is the very first step on the journey toward healing.'"I received a complimentary kindle copy from Amazon. That did not change my opinion for this review.Link to purchase:Β The Rhino Who Swallowed a Storm

Love this book!
What a powerful story! This book is written in such a clear and thoughtful way - my five year old son understood its message when we read it together without any prompting. I love that the story has so many applications. It could be for children who experience a trauma and try to hold the experience inside; however, it could also just as easily be used to help explain how to deal with powerful emotions. I purchased the book to help my son talk about his frightening experience in the hospital. He had other things in mind though - he spoke about how he feels like he has a storm inside when he's angry. He thought about how sometimes he might hit me or stomp off to his room when he is mad, and how I can be like the helper kangaroo when I come get him after he has cooled off. Really awesome book! It is on our nightstand now, along with Trace Moroney's "When I'm Feeling..." series.

Timeless Message to Kids of Love, Hope and Weathering Life's Storms
This beautifully illustrated book offers a strong, uplifting message to children about love, hope and weathering life's storms. There is a richness and charm in the illustrations of Little Rhino and his animal friends that make this a beautiful book to look at, but the message of the story makes it more than just a pretty picture book. Most children have experienced some sense of loss, fear or trauma in their lives and this book helps to convey that it is natural during those times to feel sad, alone or overwhelmed. The story conveys, very movingly, that love, faith and the kindness of others can help us through difficult times. I especially love that Little Rhino relies on both himself and others to weather his storm and that he comes through it feeling optimistic about the world and his future. This book could be helpful to any child who is experiencing a loss or major change in life. I highly recommend it!

Wow! What a great book. I normally don't write lot of reviews (good or bad). Probably one of the best illustrations I've seen in a book. My six year old son read it my four year old daughter with some help from me. They both loved it. I love the fact they have a page at the end of the book where it takes you inside the book. There are eight different questions stated about the story. I think this is designed for parents to talk to kids and describe their feelings about certain situations by relating to the story. Haven't really come across anything like this in a long time. This encourages kids to read more books. Reading Rainbow app is great but I still like buying books. I'll definitely be buying more books by LeVar Burton!!

Helpful read during difficult times
This is a great story for children (and adults) who are struggling with difficult times. We heard Mr. Burton read it and bought a copy to her our child through the difficult times dealing with COVID-19. The story is perfect and the illustrations delightful. Highly recommended!!!

My 6 year old was having a rough time with things and a friend recommended this book and I believe it put things in ...
We live in Fort McMurray, AB, and and back in May we experienced the wild fire of 2016 which left many without homes to go back to and being evacuated from our own home for 54 days. My 6 year old was having a rough time with things and a friend recommended this book and I believe it put things in to perspective for him and he was better able to express how he was feeling. I've since purchased this book for both my boys teachers and the principal at school has been recommending that all teachers at our school borrow a copy and read it to their class. It's a fabulous book if you've experienced any sort of disaster.
