Small but packed. Be sure to get an edition with accompanying audio!
Definitely get the audio accompaniment version (either CD or online) and _use_ the audio. The book itself seemed "okay" until I started listening to the audio with it (I had to buy a second copy that had audio) then it really came alive. I'm an older learner, and having the audio helps me imagine and hear what the written music should sound like, and that helps tremendously.

For those about to rock
We salute you! This is a great method for the begin miner who doesn't want to learn note by note. Ive been teaching with this book for years- perfect for ages 8-88! The chords are simple fifths at first then add cool techniques like palm muting. Real fun book- I highly recommend it.

Great for beginners.
I got this book because my guitar teacher told me to and so far I like it! I like how it teaches you how to read rhythm using sheet music and also of course, how to read tabs. Overall, if you're a beginner I recommend this! Only complaint is that if you're not a fan of bluesy classic rock type stuff, you may find the book boring. Luckily for me I'm okay with that music haha.

Not complete
This course has a DVD to accompany it. It came without it. Don't buy it without it or you don't have the complete course.

Beginner's Introduction to Rock
This is typically one of the first books that I use with my students. There is a good progression of exercises based on open position power chords, one octave minor pentatonic scales, quarter and eighth note syncopations and simple riffs based upon the 12 bar blues form. I only have two criticisms of the book (1.) the 12 bar form is overused; the open power chords could be moved to resemble pop/rock patterns (2.) the last section on lead lines should be written w/ the rhythm parts to perform w/ the student. Those two items are the only exceptions. Good job A. Stang!
