Not my cup of tea
Had a Nokia mobile phone before and really liked it. This one seems more like a toy phone, personally. I wouldn't recommend it.

It might have rated four or even five stars if UK phones had ever had a software update
I've had an Asha 311 for about a year now. When I wanted to replace my old phone I was looking for something small with decent battery life, a battery I could change when it went flat, which worked on multiple frequency bands, had a memory card slot, worked on 2G and 3G networks, and could be used a data modem through which other devices could access the Internet. I wasn't bothered about apps or web browsing, and I specifically didn't want a touch screen phone. Well, if you want those other things there really aren't any keypad phone options these days so I reluctantly chose this touch screen phone. The user interface is fairly easy to get to grips with, although it's not quite as user-friendly as the ancient Nokias (I've been using them since 1994). There are some ridiculous omissions, though. The call log only shows the date of the call, not the time. It's not always very helpful to have timestamp of "yesterday". If you touch an entry in the missed call list to try to get more information it immediately starts dialling the person. You can't transfer a number from the call log to your phonebook either (yes, really!). Nor can you insert a number from your phonebook into a simple text message (if you try, the phone converts the text message into a multimedia message and adds it as a contact card). There are a few other irritations like this. They're annoying but not enough to make me hate the phone. I suspect that some, maybe all of them, will have been fixed in the software updates which Nokia have published. However, if you're using a SIM-free, UK variant of this phone you cannot (as of February 2014) update from the original factory software release, v3.81 from June 2012. The rest of the world has had at least three major updates with bug fixes, stability and usability enhancements, and app updates and is on v7.36. Nokia UK seems to be blocking the software for British phones for some reason. So, apart from the inability to update beyond the first release software, how does it perform? Well, if you want a smart phone you should probably look elsewhere. You'd probably have guessed that from the specs and the small screen anyway. If you're looking for a light, pocket sized feature phone then this might be for you. I get nearly a week of standby time out of it with wi-fi enabled, and a few days less if I use the phone a lot. The battery can be changed in a few seconds if it goes flat and you have a charged spare in your pocket. It works on five frequency bands and on 2G/3G/3.5G networks so it's ideal for travellers. It also has wi-fi (802.11b/g/n, 2.4GHz) and Bluetooth. The built-in web browser is a bit rubbish but you can download Opera for mobiles for free and it's much better. You still wouldn't want to do any serious web browsing with it, though. The email client works most of the time but occasionally refuses to open certain messages in my Virgin Media/Blueyonder (Gmail) inbox. I just use the Opera web browser when that happens. Maybe one of those software updates which UK customers can't have would have fixed this... You can set the phone to periodically check email, and when it does you can choose whether it prefers to use wi-fi or network data. You can also set it to automatically disable data when you're roaming away from your home network so that you don't get a shocking phone bill when you return home. I have used the phone as a data modem and it seems to work well (for my tablet via Bluetooth, for my laptop via USB cable). The voice quality during phone calls is reasonably good and calls don't get dropped. I haven't heard the microphone quality myself but nobody has complained that they can't understand me. All of these were serious issues with my previous phone (which was actually almost unusable as a phone). It charges via a micro USB cable or a small Nokia power plug. A charger and a small capacity memory card is supplied but a case isn't (I found something called "Original Suncase Case with Flap and Pull Up Strap for Nokia Asha 311" on Amazon which worked well for me).I think it's a great everyday phone for people who mainly just want to make phone calls or send texts but need to use data, email or view a few web pages occasionally. The good battery life (by today's standards), swappable battery and multi-band/multi-standard operation mean it's good for travellers. A second SIM slot for international jetsetters would have been good here, but I guess you can't have everything. Or software updates from Nokia UK.

Only a spare phone for me
It is a good low priced phone and it is very easy to work, the camera is rubbish though every picture looks blurred I bought to tide me over until I get the phone I want

A neat little phone
I wanted to try out a touch screen phone but didn't want to pay a lot in case I couldn't use. It has taken some time for me to work out how to use it, but that's down to my age. It's a good little phone that's reasonably priced but I'm not really up on modern phones so don't feel qualified to judge it against other phones.
