Set phasers to "value!"
You're spending $12. You get more than what you're paying for it. The light up effects and sound are spot on to TNG. There is no way to turn the sound off when it's open. You can (however) put your thumb or tape over the speaker if that's a concern. It's about half sized of the ones in the show, which means it can easily be concealed in a pocket for a surprise if you are out and about. It looks quite authentic. The stickers are not hard to apply, just take your time with them. My batteries were slightly corroded (it's 8 years past date of manufacture at time of writing) but still functional. Easy to swap.

Exceeded expectations for $12, stickers hard to apply
This was a perfect complement to my Halloween TNG Trek costume. Sure, it's pint-sized, but it is really loud and has flashing lights! While it's clearly built to a price point I did drop it several times directly on concrete and it emerged basically unscathed.I do wish the stickers were pre-applied; I got most of them spot-on but the big sticker that goes around the "screen" is very slightly off. You don't get a second chance with the stickers. If you're looking for a screen-accurate cosplay device this ain't it, but if you just want a fun little toy this fits the bill.

An excellent, smaller scaled, replica of Star Trek's Tricorder, but with some flaws.
The replica is very well made and very true to its TV counterpart, albeit smaller than the original prop. It even has the same clicking sound made whenever a tricorder is opened/closed on screen, and generates the same sounds as a Tricorder while scanning. There's several lights that flash and glow as well, adding to its accuracy. The little booklet that's included also goes into a nice history on the tricorder from its origins in the Original Series and also covers what most of the buttons are supposed to do.However, this prop does have one glaring flaw. Most of the buttons and decorations are stickers that have to be applied manually. The largest and most difficult is the one that goes around the lights and screen of the tricorder. This sticker, unfortunately, is the easiest to fold or bend. The fact the buttons are mere stickers is not an issue. Just the fact one needs to apply the stickers themselves is the issue as one wrong move can damage the stickers or leave them misaligned. Finally the lights and sounds shut off after about a minute of use.Overall, a nice and affordable prop for Star Trek fans, perfect for collectors and role players alike.

Fascinating...
Wow. What a little gem. Have a little patience with the stickers, and you will be rewarded handsomely. Make sure to get it right the first time. I leave this on my desk and play with it daily... Yes, daily. I liked it so much I also bought the mini Enterprise, Borg Cube, and Cow Abduction... which all share space on my desk as well as play time. The tricorder is small, but it be mighty. Especially considering the $12 price tag. Very happy Trekker here.

Cheaply made
I’m honestly surprised this has so many good reviews. It’s a cute little toy but it was a big disappointment. First of all, you have to place the stickers on yourself. And if you accidentally place it off center and try to fix it they will tear really easily. Also the plastic is really cheap feeling and when opening it you have to snap it in place so it stays open. The sound quality is terrible and you have to close it and open it again just to get it to make more noise. I honestly don’t understand why any toy is made this way. Just have the designs already on it and make it with sturdier plastic. Not that hard to do. And I know it says “mini” on it, but it was definitely smaller than I thought it would be. Overall, I would not buy this again nor recommend it to any fellow Trekies.

Insanely Great for the Price!
This tricorder is very awesome for ~ $9. The lights and sound are fantastic, and once stickered up it looks really cool. The door even makes a ratcheting sound upon opening and closing. I prefer the smaller size because I can slip this in my pocket at costume parties, but it's large enough to look convincing (could be a smaller variant). The only downside is that you have to be very careful when applying the decals, because the indentations have very tight tolerances. I did (slightly) mess up a couple; my advice is to carefully line them up at the top and work your way down.Yes, in a dream world this would have the decals pre-applied, different sounds and a button to shut the sound off, and even some LEDs on the front. But at this price, it's semi-miraculous how much quality and how many features were squeezed in. I'd give it 6/5 stars if it were possible. If you're a Next Gen fan, I HIGHLY recommend this!
