Q: color and $30 is the only difference between the "original" and "pet"?

Mine is purple handled, which I actually prefer. I am confident the telescoping handle works the same no matter the model. I opted for spending less money and I am very happy with my purchase. My carpet is not very long in nap and fibers are picked up rather easily and beautifully, so matted down and heavily trafficked flow looks like new again after 5 years' wear. I love mine and wish I would have bought it sooner!

Q: does this minimize the look of vacuum tracking making appearance look smoother (just before company comes)?

To an extent it will, however, the rake lines are short lived as they will be flattened out as your guests walk on the carpet. The rug rake used as intended will gently lift the carpet fibers making it easier to clean and add life to your carpets. It is an excellent tool.
