Perfect
Overview:As described.Experience:Yes, meets all expectations. I've been down this road before. different brands different styles, the name of the game is does it work. In this case yes. decently finished and as stated galvanized steel. No problems. Install is standard. Not sure how a roof vent would wow me but generic plane Jane functional is about as good as it gets.1 star=safety issue or just junk.2 stars=major flaw, issues with quality, not as described.3 stars=minor flaw or just short of expectations.4 stars=meets expectations with no negative aspects.5 stars=well it's got to wow me, and exceed expectations.

Solid, heavy gauge
I was pleasantly surprised with the gauge of this vent cap. I had expected it to be pretty flimsy, like what you would get from the big box stores. This unit is built well and should last a very long time. The damper moves freely.

restricts airflow significantly
this vent cap is meant for a 6 in pipe. area of the pipe opening is 27 sq in. area of the rectangular opening in the vent is 19 sq in. So airflow capacity is reduced by almost 1/3.

Easy enough to assemble, not well made
Ordered two for a project I needed to wrap up (couldn't source anything the right size locally) and both arrived with the screen either loose in the box or snapped off one side. The screen is held in place with with 3 micro spot welds and easy separates. I had to use caulk to hold them in place (luckily nobody looks on the roof for cosmetic stuff).

Heavy duty, no-nonsense vent
ompared to competing products available at the local big box stores, this thing is a beast, weighing in at over five pounds. The inlet pipe is 8 inches in diameter, and the entire unit is made of 18-gauge steel. Instead of pop rivets, this unit has strategically placed and welded nuts which allow the entire assembly to be bolted together securely with six cap screws (5mm Allen wrench required but not included). Advantageously, the entire unit can be un-bolted as well for maintenance or repair. There is a hinged damper plate that is held down by gravity (no springs). The vent outlet is covered by an expanded metal mesh attached to a rigid metal frame. The listing claims improved ventilation and efficiency, but this is an unbased comparison. In reality, the vent inlet provides 48.7” of free area. The outlet provides less than half of that, minus whatever losses the screen introduces and the effects of the back pressure caused by the heavy damper plate. The material is sometimes referred to as “galvanized steel” and other times as “stainless steel”, or even “high-density steel”. It is covered in a heavy matt black paint (powder coat?) so I cannot definitively say what material it is made of, though I would expect it is conventional galvanized steel.Fit and finish are surprisingly good, and the parts fit together without too much futzing. There are no assembly instructions, so I will offer my recommendations. (Make all connections loosely, then go back and tighten them when you are finished.) Put the top half of the mesh outlet grille on first with the L-shaped edge at the top. Then attach the vent top to the base at the rear of the vent. Finally, attach the bottom front of the top to the bottom of the grille frame and the base simultaneously. This FEITON 8-Inch Roof Exhaust Vent with Damper is solid and well made, and should last for many years. I see the ability to assemble/disassemble it is an advantage for installation as well as for future maintenance. The expanded metal mesh grille is not something a squirrel, raccoon or other potential intruder is ever going to chew through. I hate doing rework; this vent impresses me as a one-and-done.

good replacement for vent
it is half of what HD is selling and same quality

Marginal Design
The hood mounting collar and 8" duct collar are spot welded to the flange, not seam welded. The seal along the seams appear to be a layer of powder coat, nothing more - not a long-term reliable leak-proof design. The damper is heavy, 8" round galvanized steel, and will offer a significant obstruction to anything but a large fan. My fan is a smaller 160cfm fan. I have decided not to install this good-looking roof vent. Return.
