Q: This doesnt put off much heat, is there some way to tune this or is it just suppose to be for decoration?

Im sure you can adjust the levels of heat that are being produced

Q: Does it rust? we bought a cover but i’m worried it might rust on our patio? can i put a rug underneath it?

No rusting so far but recommend bolting it down - you don't want it to blow over as the glass tube will be destroyed and it's expensive to replace.

Q: What do we do if it doesn’t work? We put it together and it’s not lighting. Any ideas?

There is a “thermocoupler “ safety device that will not allow the unit to be lit until it comes up to flame temperature. To make this happen, turn the knob to pilot or light (however your reads) push in and hold the knob and push the striker button. Keep holding the knob down for one minute then turn the knob all the way on and set your flame to desired level. It will work then. Thanks.
