Ends up expensive if you have a lot of plants!
I think this has probably helped control the fungal gnat problem on my plants, combined with sticky traps but it doesn't go far if you have lots of plants (I've got 23)

It does what it says it does.
This is an excellent product that helps to break the cycle of cactus gnats. Great price too.

Product is ok but overpriced.
Nice product, I still see those flies sticking on to the yellow traps that I bought previously but probably much less. Can’t say I completely got rid of it so next step is to try Pyrethrum powderAlso I think this is way overpriced for what it is. A small bag of stones for £16? They should be dirt cheap!

Gnats are thriving
This stuff is completely useless, I put a lot to make a thick barrier, and, after 3 weeks, I have gnats partying on its surface, and there are plenty of them. I've been more successful with a regular cinnamon. It's fizzing when watered and it makes a dust cloud. Money wasted, and it doesn't come cheap.

Life is better now.
After a bit of trial and error and a further purchase after running out very quickly, our house is nearly a sciarid-free zone. No more flies landing in drinks, buzzing around your face and crawling all over the windows. You need to use quite a thick layer and tuck it round the edges of the compost for it to work and as we now have very little choice of compost and the little beasties love to live in peat-free compost, meaning that every new plant you buy is already infested, it is something which is essential to anyone who loves house plants.

Useful in my battle against those pesky fungus gnats
The biggest pest problem I have had in recent years has been the dreaded fungus gnat. I like to grow plants from seed and cuttings, and often lose the majority to fungus gnats - so depressing when I've put all that effort into doing all the right things. I'm really carefully not to overwater, and put a thick layer of gravel on the top of the pots, but the pesky little fungus gnats still manage to get at the roots of my seedlings! I also have lots of houseplants and have the same problem with them.I garden organically so it's essential for me that this diatomaceous earth is 100% natural, free from chemicals, and safe for children and pets. I have already tried a couple of small packets from other brands, and found it has worked well in controlling fungus gnats in my house and conservatory, so welcomed the opportunity to stock up with a big 2 litre tub.Apart from breaking the life cycle of the fungus gnat, I also like the idea that this product boosts nutrients and improves soil health. When I pot on seedlings or repot houseplants, I shall make sure that I recycle the old granules, as they add silica, calcium, magnesium and iron to the soil, and also help increase soil water retention, microbial activity and aeration. My only niggle about this fungus gnat topper is that, although better value than smaller quantities in packets, it's still quite expensive at the current price of £16.99.

Desert sands...
I've been using this type of plant topper for a few years now and it has made a noticeable difference to the amount of pesky sciarid flies in the house, nowadays I just assume any I see came in through the window rather than out of a houseplant. I also assume they'll be leaving by the window since they won't be setting up home in any of my houseplants either. This ENTOEND Plant Topper seems to work in the same way as others, it forms a physical barrier on top of the compost that prevents incoming flies laying eggs in the compost and existing larvae/flies already in there from ever leaving. The notable thing about this one is the colour which is a warm sand colour rather than the blue-grey shade you normally see. It's actually nice to be able to choose a different shade to go with different plants, this one gives a look of the desert and might suit plants from that environment. The colour of some of these grits changes over time as they absorb minerals from the compost underneath, I haven't noticed that happening yet with this one but it does get much darker when it's damp. As it dries it lightens again and you could almost use it as an indication of when to water your plant, depending on the species. The pack is more generous than most and will treat a few small/medium plants or a couple of larger ones. You have to be generous with the amount you use, completely covering the surface of the compost about 1cm deep or more, otherwise it won't work. It also won't work overnight, it takes a few days or weeks to really disrupt the lifecycle of the pesky things, but it does work and is a chemical-free way to keep your houseplants free of flies.

Best solution for Fungus Gnats
While you can get a myriad of sprays and treatments for annoying Fungus Gnats, this product (Diatomaceous Earth) will resolve any infestation. Not suitable for all insects, only those that specifically lay eggs in the soil and have to crawl through the topping of Diatomaceous Earth you've covered the soil with. Essentially cuts the insect to shreds as it crawls through it. Used this product for years, like the fact I'm not using any pesticides or ineffective sprays that fail to penetrate the soil. Just need to ensure you've completely covered the soil, couple of centimetres is fine. Nice big bag, far cheaper than buying the smaller tubs which is good for treating very many house plants. Just ensure it is actually Fungus Gnats not some other annoying pest. Recommended product.
