With this being my favourite Paradise Lost album, I was looking forward to this remastered version, hoping to hear previously hidden little details but .... but unfortunately I actually find myself preferring the original master. Even though the 2 versions are very, very similar, the one thing that I can pick out as being different is the drum sound, with the snare sounding a bit thinner and less full than on the original, other than that I can't really pick out any differences. Definitely not worth buying if you've already got the original, and if you don't have the original; go and buy that one instead!

Paradise Lost pull out all the stops on the misery bus to bring you the listener a bleak landscape of souring strings and lyrical expression void of hope or cheer. This album from front to back will envelope you in stabbing nihilism that will drain any colour or Joy from life, showing it for exactly what it is: a pointless parody of existential non-existence. Leaving any hope a flacid worm on the rain soaked backalley of anything joyous or abundant.Lol. That was fun! Ok, so Host is a cracking album, no filler. Excellent song writing, lyrical themes, production and well placed and well timed musicianship on each track.This album has Paradise Lost stamped all over it, if you don't think it sounds like them you're not listening properly!Buy this album, crack open a brandy and a cigar, or go for a walk in the dark and SOAK this album into you. It's brilliant.

ニック・ホルムズ(vo)　グレッグ・マッキントッシュ(g)　アーロン・アーディ(g)　スティーヴ・エドモンドソン(b)　リー・モリス(dr)英国出身ゴシックメタル・バンド。「Music for nations」から大手の「EMI」に移籍しての1999年7th。しかし本作品は、厳密には「メタル」とは呼べない。前作「One second」にて、楽曲の隠し味程度に取り入れていたエレクトロニクス要素や打ち込み風ビートを、今作では全面開放。前々作「Draconian times」と同じバンドだとはとても思えない変貌ぶり。ギターの音はほとんど聴かれず、ダンサンブルな打ち込みビートと、ピアノやストリングスなどの生楽器やシンセの音が幾重にも折り重なり、非常に繊細に作り込まれている。ニックの澄み切ったヴォーカルもこのアルバムの雰囲気に実によくあっている。個人的は初期の濁声よりこっちの方が好きだったりする。このジャンルの先駆者として孤高の独走を続けてきた彼らが、「メタル」から一歩離れた視点で制作したアルバム。気が滅入るような重々しいギターはここでは皆無。そういったわかりやすいヘヴィさよりも、彼らの場合は静かな曲やポップな曲であっても、メロディ自体にある種の重さがある。実際「憂い・陰り・哀愁」といった要素は、過去のどの作品よりも濃い。ファンの間では賛否両論あるが、「メタルは聴かないけどメランコリックな音楽は好きだ」という方は試しに聴いてみてはどうだろう。

私はpeaceviileファンクラブ、パラダイス・ロスト愛好家を自認するものですが、やはりエレポポップ化の要素をまとわる老舗バンド（ミュージシャン）に対して世間の風当たりが強い現実という伝統的(?)な日本マスコミ(弱いパブリックイメージ）には毎回笑わせられる。つまり、King Crimson,Banco,Genesis,Yes,Le Orme,Eric Clapton,Jeff Beckなどに始まり、昔（デビュー当初）硬派な印象を持っていた『あなたの憧れ』が裏切られた感のある『一時的・表層的退化』が許せないと思うリスナー（そう、ファンでなく一ユーザに過ぎない）の評価というものがいつもわれわれの堅実な批評（感想でもよい）を揺るがすものであってはいけない。われわれは、このパラダイスロストにおける何を知っているのか？ニック・ホームズ Nick Holmesグレッグ・マッキントッシュ Greg Mackintosh の『いま』を、皆さんは何を共有化できたのか？そういう大げさに言えば『人間の実質的本質』をファンならば感じ取っていただきたい。ちなみに、Hostは？当然大傑作であることはまちがいない。
