A Fabulous First sewing Book for the Beginner Sewer
My First Sewing Machine by Coralie BijassonMy first impression of this book was the brightly coloured and fun picture on the front, which draws you into opening the book to find out what is between the covers. The first chapter before you begin isn’t too long winded but gives you enough information as a first time sewer. It is a lovely size book and ideal for any child wanting to sew their first sewing project by machine.Once opening the book and flicking through the pages, the pictures inside are just as colourful, wanting you to explore every one of the 30 projects. Each project in the book has excellent diagrams and instructions making it very clear for the young beginner to be able to make a lovely project. Taking you from a basic pin cushion (ideal for any sewing room) through to a more complicated backpack pattern.I love the variety of projects on offer, from a scrunchie to a T-shirt revamp to even a sewn necklace. There really is something for every level of young sewer. As a full-time sewer and pattern designer myself, this will make a lovely addition to my library for when I am teaching first time sewers, from children through to even adults.I would also recommend it for anyone starting their journey, as many of the patterns can be for adults too as well as children, for example, the shopping bag, shoulder bag, basket tidy and wall organiser. If I could turn the clock back to when I started my sewing journey, I would have loved this as one of my first sewing books. With Summer holidays creeping ever closer, this would make a fabulous book for the young sewer in your life to be kept entertained for hours. It is very competitively priced at £9.99.

Some nice projects, with easy to follow instructions.
My First Sewing Machine – Coralie BijassonI have just received this lovely book to review. A nice size for smaller hands to hold, bright and colourful, printed on quality paper and clearly presented. It states from 7 years + but there are some really nice projects for any age group including adults beginning to sew.It does appear to be aimed towards girls around the 7- 14 age in particular.Obviously some adult assistance would be required for the new younger sewer.30 projects ranging from bags, gifts, clothes and household items. Clear, easy to read instructions with colour photographs and diagrams to help. Some handy tips at the beginning and very few materials required for each project. Some nice ideas and quicker makes for presents. This book would be a lovely gift and a very useful reference book for anyone interested in learning how to sew and to produce some really nice items.

Biased towards girls
Although the book itself is okay. The fact it is completely geared towards girls bothered me. There are no projects for boys or even an image of a boy anywhere in the book. I’m teaching my 8 year old grandson to sew and he absolutely loves it. I am sending it back as it does not send the right message.

A range of tempting projects
What this book lacks in tips, techniques and sewing machine information it certainly makes up for in the selection of projects. Ranging from a simple pincushion and key ring through to a backpack and shoulder bag there are 30 projects in all, categorised into Sewing Workshop, Bedroom, Bags, Clothes & Accessories, My Satchel, My Suitcase and the Kitchen.Although not mentioned in the Contents page there is a “Before You Begin” section - a couple of pages with minimal information on what’s needed to get started on sewing a project in the book. It includes a handful of headings such as choosing fabric, topstitching, clipping corners and the zipper foot, to name a few. Each project lists the materials needed but details such as how to do slip stitch or ladder stitch to close up turning gaps, as recommended in project steps, are not featured. This is a bright colourful book. There are clear diagrams and the step-by-step instructions are good. The projects call on varied skills so it’s a good learning tool. And the use of an adult to fill in the knowledge gaps is certainly needed.A couple of the patterns require enlarging, which is a shame as the colour-filled “spare” pages could easily have been used to include full size templates for those patterns. With plenty of guidance from an adult this is a useful book for a beginner with many tempting projects, a great gift idea.

Nice projects and colourful design aimed at younger sewers.
My First Sewing Machine by Coralie Bijasson is a bright colourful and well illustrated book with 30 projects aimed at the young sewer. The projects could also be good for a beginner sewer of any age. There are 2 pages of tips for using a sewing machine and starting out but this could be more detailed and include some illustrations. I think if you have never used a sewing machine this might not be enough information, although I anticipate that young sewers would be starting off with some adult supervision. Maybe some pictures and guides how to thread a machine would be helpful. Each of the projects ranging from small accessories and bags to simple clothing items are aimed at young girls and the photographs show girls of about 7-12 years. There are no projects for boys although it says it’s ideal for creative kids. Each of the projects have step by step instructions and a cutting diagram to help you get the most out of fabric and illustrations to show some of the steps. I think good value and a nice gift for a young girl who has just got a sewing machine.

Fabulous introduction to sewing.
What a fabulous book for children with their first sewing machine. There is a good information section at the beginning, followed by 30 fabulous projects which I believe children will get great satisfaction from making, and they are so much fun too. From front to back the photography and instructional diagrams are excellent. As an adult I would love to make some of the projects. An excellent book all round.
