This book provided a lot of insight. I found it excellent to help with the historical understanding of capitalist development. I do wonder however whether resources like oil were the cause of, which the author alleges I believe, rather than the means of expanding the power of the rentier class. Either way, this is a very useful way of looking at things as the patterns of exploitation and resource use are very familiar both historically and presently. His writing style is not particularly dynamic but then again it doesn't have to be.

This significant book should be read in conjunction with Robert Corfe's important book, "The Crisis of Democracy in the advanced industrial economies," which reaches the conclusion that the left/right divide that has served as the medium in resolving democracy's problems over so long a period is now reaching the end of its useful life. As the left/right conflict is now compounding rather than resolving the most important issues of our time, a new rationale is needed as a mechanism for democracy.

Fascinating book - had to buy it for a course on Iraq and the history of multinational oil corporations. It was a fantastic course, ultimately helped me to think in of oil in terms of sovereignty and democratization and how oil itself is intrinsically linked within this process, very interesting especially in relation to my knowledge of Orientalism and its how oil has shaped this Middle Eastern perceptions in the West. Mitchells conception of how oil itself maintained the post war currency system is something I had never heard of before. I cant rate this book highly enough, for a rather cynical take of oil, but one that challenges your worldview in a very positive way.
