This product arrived heavily wrapped in bubble-wrap but despite this the pestle was snapped in two. I reported this immediately and was e-mailed back straight away to be told that a replacement was being sent out right then and this arrived in good order a few days later. As anything CAN get damaged in transit as regular online shoppers will appreciate the best defence against this concern is a good response when it does happen, I give this review 5-stars in part for this excellent response and partly because I love the design and quality of the product - good value too. Bought this as a gift for some good friends... didn't really know what we were looking for but we clearly made the right choice.. they love it and are using it regularly each week. They are really into their cooking and have found this a really useful addition to their kitchen. They keep it out on the worktop when they are not using it to cook, because they said it looks a really nice accessory that matches their kitchen. Recommend this great quality item at a great price too.

Easy use,big enough,very heavy, well made,only one star off, because of the packing, that does need a lot involvement. Otherwise it is a good item.

Bought this to crush food pellets for my parrot. The pellets are hard baked and do not break down sufficiently in a coffee grinder or in a mixer. The mortar (bowl) arrived in tact but unfortunately the pestle was broken, despite being really well wrapped in bubble wrap. This was really disappointing however the supplier was extremely apologetic and prompt to replace. The only disappointment is that the replacement pestle doesn't match the bowl as well as the broken original and neither resemble the actual photograph that is displayed on the amazon site. It does the job extremely well though and as the item isn't 'for display' purposes, I am very happy.

This a lovely item; sturdy, attractive and very practical. It is exactly what I wanted, and I have used it constantly since it arrived to crush peppercorns.

This was a present so I don't know how it has stood the test of time. However i looked round the net quite a bit to find the right thing and there are lots of these pestle and mortars and some are vastly more expensive that this and don't seem a lot better. When this arrived I thought it was stylish and looked really good for the price, just as good as some others that were much more expensive. The person I bought it for also loved it. However I don't know what its like to use or if it has stood the test of time so can't comment on that aspect.

Arrived within 48 hours of ordering very well wrapped in several yards of bubblewrap.This is a VERY heavy pestle & mortar that is a quality product.Exactly as I hoped it would be, I have been searching for quite a while for a black pestle & mortar of this quality and they are normally priced much higher than this,so I am thrilled.

I think most of the gushing reviewers of this product have been won over by the fantastic properties of granite (a product of mother nature) rather than the properties of this man-made product. Like granite in general, this product will pulverise most spices and herbs.3 stars could be deemed harsh, but as you probably only want to buy one pestle and mortar for all your needs, I'd say you can do better than buying this one, and here's the reasons why:It loses one star because the rough part on the pestle should go about half way up the length of it on a well-designed model. Instead, only the crushing tip is rough, meaning you can't use the sides of the pestle to crush against the sides of the mortar - a bit of a shame.It loses the other star because of size. I made fresh green curry paste in it yesterday, which was great, but I really wish I'd gone for a bigger model as that would have made the job so much easier. I had to mash it in bits, then stir it all together in a bowl, and mash it a bit with the back of a spoon in there to kid myself that I was mashing it together. A larger model would have made the work quicker and easier, and improved the infusion of flavours as I'd be able to work them all together.I'd advise buying a larger version, unless you have a tiny kitchen, or are too weak to pick up and move a larger set. Even in that case though, you should consider that a larger version will save you a lot of hard work.Don't worry about cupboard space, a pestle and mortar set is a thing of beauty that should be on display, so as long as there's space on the window sill for a big pestle and mortar, go for that. And try to get one with roughness on the pestle going half-way up, too.

These ceramic mortar and pestles obviously aren't comparable to more coarse and heavy duty granite versions but that's largely the point of these. Simple and quick grinding of only a few tablespoons of spices at most and then just chuck it in the dishwasher.Would never use this for a pesto but for this use case it's proven excellent.
