Will this back up photos directly from an Iphone?

It will not work for iphone cause this card reader is for SD4.0, the iphone lightining cable interface will not afford the electric current as iphone allows a rated current of 100 mA, while PGYTECH card reader is over 250 mA

That's the purpose of the reader, you can plug it to your computer and it's detect your card as an USB stick.

when you plug it in, does it show up as multiple external drives?

Yes, as long as you have a card in each slot. Each card shows up individually and you can even transfer between cards.
