I have 2 cats one long haired and these work great. The air pockets created allow the hair to go to the vent. 90% less pet hair on cloths but dryer filter requires attention after every load.

Ok, I just washed all of my dryer balls and they survived, admirably. I washed them in hot water with Sam's Club Ultimate Clean Liquid Laundry Detergent, no fabric softener. I dried them under very high heat in the dryer—and they did NOT unravel. Think about it. If you wash a wool sweater in hot water (like my x-wife would do) the sweater shrinks. Then if you put that sweater in the dryer with high heat, it will shrink even more. They are fantastic, and I never took them out of the dryer, just added the clothing that needed to be dried on top.

Hello! Great question! The dryer balls will probably need to replaced every 2-4 years depending on how often you do laundry. They do collect lint and pet hair (which keeps this stuff off your clothes) and you can remove lint and make them look clean and new again by giving them a shave. When they start to get too small to be effective, that is when you'll want to buy new balls. It won't happen overnight and your balls will still work, just not as well. Q: Will the Smart Sheep Balls fluff a down quilt while drying?

I agree with answer above. Drying down really depends on having a lot of space in the dryer. I’ve dried a huge down comforter in my front-load dryer at home. It worked ok, just took a couple of days of drying and repositioning the comforter inside the dryer. Would have been faster to go to the laundromat with the wool balls and use one of their ginormous dryers, but eventually worked at home. That said, I love these for every dryer load. They definitely reduce dry time!!
