Impressive, lightweight trail running shoe.
I received my Speedcross 4 GTX's on Friday and took them straight out of the box and ran 10km on Saturday and again on Sunday and was impressed. The weight is clearly shown within the technical data of the advert but I was surprised by how light and balanced they felt. My right foot is about half a size bigger than my left (relatively normal I think) but both shoes were a good fit - I'm size 11. I use Saucony's for the road which are a little wider at the toe than the Salomon's, but the tighter fit and narrowness at the toe gave better stability in the mud and I felt confident immediately. The grip on very wet and muddy tracks was excellent and the goretex kept my feet dry despite the puddles, rain, sleet and snow! Obviously with a trail shoe, you don't expect as much cushioning as a road shoe and every so often I could feel larger rocks through the soles however, both my weekend routes had approx. 1.5km of road/pavement running and the GTX 4's were more than comfortable on the tarmac/concrete. Overall, I'm delighted with them and will buy them again. Footnote (no pun!) - I have a pair of Salomon walking shoes which are equally comfortable but they have taken quite a bit longer to 'break in' which might reflect other people's comments on sizing.

Great for exclusively off-road running but very limited use on tarmac
These are a great pair of trail running shoes if you're going to be exclusively running on soft ground (grass, mud, earth, sand, etc). They are comfortable, sturdy, waterproof, supportive on uneven ground, and will take a battering in their stride (no pun intended!). I have a neutral pronation and these shoes feel good for me over long distances. However, they are clearly designed for digging into soft ground and therefore have a relatively small contact area with hard surfaces due to their stud like tread configuration. The rubber is soft so traction on tarmac is not in itself a problem. However, due to the stud configuration and softness of the rubber, you will get very few miles from them on tarmac surfaces before the studs wear out. So much so that I don't use them when I'm running trails that include any tarmac surface whatsoever, and have bought a pair of Saucony Trail Runners for such purposes. They are awesome for tough mudder / hell runner type events etc, but I wouldn't rely on them as my only trail runner as I suspect I'd need a new pair every 200km or so. Put into context I 'broke them in' with a 6km walk to the pub on the road and saw significant signs of wear to the studs as a result.

Excellent trail running shoes.
I am pleased with these running shoes. They are comfortable off road, offer firm grip and the waterproof material makes a real difference during the winter. Important to make clear that these are not comfortable on hard surfaces, but off road, they are perfect.

Brilliant for running on various surfaces!
Bought this due to seeing them for a fantastic price. The quality is definitely there and they certainly distinguish themselves from a typically £30 pair of running trainers. The "laces" I thought might be a problem, but in fact I far prefer them over typical laces, they keep a solid tightness until you release them, even over a long run, I didn't feel like they were loosing up.They fit perfectly (size 10) and the insole fits my foot arch very nicely (normal arched feet) and overall feel perfect on my feet. These are clearly intended for off road / trail running due to the tread. However, having done some street runs with them, I felt steady and had plenty of grip in dry and wet. They however perform exceptionally on a trail surfaces, I'm sure their are better suited versions of these shoes for road runs if that's the only purpose you need them.Overall, highly recommend. I'm not sure I'd pay over £100 for them as that seem to be their retail price, but certainly worth it below that price.
