Q: Can you remove the backrest?

Yes, the backrest and the arm it sits on can be fully removed. BTW- I've had this chair almost a month now and LOVE it! It's high-quality, and the knee cushion is thick enough to keep my shins/knees from hurting.

Q: can you lean back for a change in sitting position? like, can I put my feet on the knee rest and lean back? I cant sit still long

You can, but because the seat is angled downward towards the kneeling pad, it’s a bit awkward. It’s really just intended to be used as a kneeling chair. I started using this about 6 years ago in my work office and it really helped my back pain because it forces you to have good posture when sitting.
