I tend to keep mine rather clean so I don't have any issues with wear and tear on the ice pack. \nI suppose if you are concerned just wipe it down with a damp cloth before you put it back in the freezer each use. Obviously was with gentle dish soap if it is really dirty or has caked on stuff.
