What a great whistle!
What a difference a well made whistle makes! This was so worth the extra money to have a Jerry Freeman Tweaked Key of D Mellow Dog Tin Penny Irish Whistle. I purchased a Clarke Sweetone penny whistle the last week of February after watching multiple penny whistle tutors and teachers on YouTube videos. The consensus seemed to be to start with the Clarke Sweetone as it is the easiest to play, and the most likely to ensure a good experience to encourage continuing with the instrument. That was not my experience, and I was so ready to give up on penny whistle altogether. I just couldn’t make it sound right. I then saw some videos commenting on the Freeman tweaked whistles and thought I'd give it a try. I love it! No more cracking shrieks when I jump octaves, no more fits and starts, it just plays beautifully and the tone is lovely. I'm so glad I decided to get this whistle. It's so fun to play and have a recognizable tune come out of it. I might actually be able to learn to play a lot of the tunes I've seen on YouTube. Thank you, Jerry, for making such a lovely instrument.

Nice Instrument
Okay - I like this whistle. It is a little more expensive, but has great sound and is easy to play. I am not an experienced player and am only learning. I had tried some of the cheaper whistles, but this one was better sounding and easier to play. I wish that it would have come with some kind of case. Other than that - I would recommend.

A big step up from a beginner whistle!
Only a few weeks ago I got an inexpensive Clarke Sweetone D whistle to try out playing tin whistle. Of course I love Concerning Hobbits and really wanted to try to play it. So, I am a bit hooked on playing the whistle and wanted to up the quality of my instrument - but not break the bank and get one that could come to me fairly quickly. After watching a bunch of Youtube videos I heard about the Jerry Freeman tweaked whistles. He takes off the shelf whistles and vastly improves them. Instead of a $20 whistle you pay about $60 (this includes shipping cost) for something that sounds FAR better. You can really tell a big difference. I have also ordered a more expensive whistle - but there is quite a wait list on that one and it is coming from Ireland. It seemed like Killarney, Lir and Wild Irish are three popular pro models that cost about $120. I decided to buy the Wild Irish just based on watching some of the reviews. But the Killarney also had a nice sparky sound to it. Anyway, the Mellow Dog is a real nice step up from the basic beginner. Mine does clog sometimes, maybe I am too much a wet whistler? Also hitting the lowest note seems a bit tricky as does getting the highest one right. I did not have an issue playing the lowest note on the cheap one. Not sure if it is that the mellow dog is a bigger bore whistle or not. One bummer of ordering one of these is the shipping cost. The whistle is like $45, but the shipping brings it to about $60. Also, it does not have a bag/pouch included which is unfortunate. All in all I am pleased and think this is a nice advanced beginner option and beyond!

Just Started Playing and It's Wonderful!
I'm a newcomer to the tin whistle, although I have experience with woodwind instruments. Like many people, I started with the $13 whistle. I liked it, but breath control was definitely a problem and each time I picked it up was like starting over. Based on recommendations, I ordered a Mellow Dog--and I'm so glad I did!The whistle arrived early--a nice surprise. It has the lovely mellow tone described by others and changing octaves is a breeze. It can be loud! When I played on the back porch last night, crows flew into the trees to see what was going on. Four deer stepped out of the woods a quarter mile away and stared at me with their ears cocked. So I have a fan club of sorts.Anyway, I highly recommend this whistle, especially if you're just beginning to play, because starting with a squeaky whistle will only discourage you.

Perfectly tuned. Fun to play.
Now, what you get is the tubing from one whistle, presumably a Walton’s Mellow D whistle, hence “Mellow”; and then you get the mouthpiece of a Feadóg whistle, hence “Dog”.After Jerry makes his tweaks, the whistle becomes much greater than the simple sum of its parts. As my title states, this whistle is ridiculously tuned, down to the 10Mhz tolerance according to my tuner, which is so painstakingly difficult to achieve on both octaves, I am thoroughly impressed that he was able to achieve this level of tuning. The play of the whistle is unlike any of my others: it takes very soft pressure for all of the lower octave notes, and a surprisingly strong amount of force to cleanly reach the higher octave. I haven’t experienced anything like this in the whistles I’ve played. I could almost describe it as an exponential ramp up, rather than a linear ramp up of pressure required. This is simply a characteristic of the whistle and has no bearing positively or negatively in any review or critiquing process, just a noteworthy mention of a unique trait. All whistles have them, and this is what makes each whistle unique in its own way, completely separate of sound.Speaking of sound….The raspy chiff of this whistle sounds heavenly to anyone looking for that traditional folksy tone and remains consistently present even at its highest note.Overall, Mr. Freeman is truly a master of his craft and I am proud to say that I own one of these delightful creations. This is most definitely a whistle that any professional or amateur can appreciate and enjoy playing.
