You'll want a check valve so the water only flows out and not back into the well or sump

It is a sump pump so most likely, yes is the answer. It must be submerged so if you want to use it in your basement, it is suggested you install a sump/well, install the pump and add a check valve and piping to the exterior.

I'm pumping fresh water, so I don't know about brine water.
